If someone points at someone and says, "that person looks like one of those black dolls that we used to see when we were young" would this still be deemed offensive in these idiots eyes. I don't see what difference using the actual word makes.

I remembered back to the 70s and a sitcom called "Love Thy Neighbour" where a white and black neighbour called each other Nig Nog, Sambo, Honky etc. This programme was very funny and popular at the time.

It would never be allowed on air now.

Have we made to abandon our sense of humour

You'd only get away with it if your name was Jonathan Woss or Russell Brand

You are talking about 'Love thy Neighbour' with the late Jack Smethurst and the black guy whose name escapes me but is in Eastenders at present. The show highlighted the white neighbour's ignorance against their neighbours' superior manners and enlightened outlook. But you are right, we'll never see it again.

By the way the term 'Paki' is offensive because it has been used in an offensive way and derogatory way for years. I don't think that can be defended.

If I said I was going down the Paki shop to get a paper, it would not be meant in an offensive way. If I was truly racist I would not be patronising them in the first place.

It is surely more to do with the context.

Do we take offence at" Pommie Bastard", "English Pig" "Scouse Git" in all of these it is the second word that we would take exception with.

You seem to be suggesting that paki, brit, aussie, turk, greek etc. are synonyms - all used to make a factual description of someone's ethnicity; they are not and yours is the argument typically used to attempt to justify a term that the whole world over knows to be, at best, offensive and, at worst, racist.

If you actually thought that paki is just another word shortened for ease of use to make a factual reference, then you clearly don't think enough.

Sorry, but I find your reasoning offensive. One of my young pakistani students -a delightful 14 year old girl - was verbally attacked outside her own home the other night. A stranger approached and shouted 'Oi paki why don't you just piss off back where you belong!' I believe it is never acceptable to use this term.

A great hang-out for the closet racists, this, with a few honourable exceptions.

Anyone who thinks "golliwog" is acceptable obviously condones "wog", a word I'm happy to say I haven't heard being spoken in years.

I think the term 'paki' originated from racist 80's English skinheads.

I think Carol Thatcher looks like a golliwog, well a bit like a blond middle aged one, whose had a bad hair day and had some serious Photoshop image workover, and told to shut the jolly well up and apologize by the BBC!

She told them what they could do with an apology, something about putting it where the sun doesn't shine and so was given the order of the boot.

God, don't you love it here in the jolly old TR of NC.

All this wittering on about golliwogs and Carol Thatcher and then told that photos of Mars are nothing to do with boring postings about restuarants/properties/kocans/PTPs/GCs/MMMMMMM/Where can I buy a toaster/Flights to Ercan etc and they shouldn't be posted as they have nothing to do with the TRNC!

Well, whoopy jolly do. I'm off to choir practice. You all have a nice day. What next?

An urgent appeal by the Kyrenia Hamster Society?

I'm afraid that some things have got rather silly. There are MOBO [music of black origin] awards, but if there were MOWOs one might assume that the KKK were involved and there would be tremendous opposition. There are many examples of where "black" is touted as a legitimate description where the use of white couldn't possibly be used without howls of abuse. Let's just have a level playing field.

In the world of Social Services it is no longer acceptable to ask for a black coffee it is deemed racist. You have to ask for a coffee without milk, no mention of a white coffee though. Crazy or what?........

The term "paki" is not just a shortened term for Pakistani as a large number of the people on the receiving end are probably Indian or from Bangladesh or Ugandan asians or more probably UK born and bred.

It is an insulting term used by those of little intelligence .

Golliwogs may have been a harmless toy to some people but the name is derived from the use of the word wog which is a perjorative term for those with black skin. As mentioned above not a word much in use nowadays thankfully.

Does the very use of the word golliwog mean someone is racist? Probably not but it does mean that they are insensitive and don't understand the issues behind the racism problem.

Just my opinion but I am happier with that than apologists for Miss Thatcher although I am prepared to believe that there was an issue here with who her mother was.

The term WOG comes from westernised oriental gentleman. As explained by a black African gentleman on radio 2 this week.

I have a plan today to begin a clear out of unwanted staff in my business, I do not wish to pay redundancy money so what I will do is

Strike up conversations with selected employees and ask them if they remember the black dolls that you used to be able to get when we were younger or the labels on the jam jars, what were they called?

When they reply with the word Golliwog, I will sack them on the spot, with no comeback whatsoever.

Ridiculous right?

Or is it

And a Golly is Golly

So why the need for them to vanish forever, why not rename them.

Or is it the image that is deemed offensive by the PC.

Funny isn't it, when you want to dare raise a question on any race/gender/religion issues in Britain, seems with the so called politcal correctiveness idiots (that have ruined the country) you just can't win, speak out/raise a concern - your racist, write a comment/or reply on a forum like this - wow your now a closet racist, what the hell happened to freedom of speech??? are we not allowed to have our own opinions or views any more, have we all got to conform as to what these idiot preach to us???

Message 23 - the term "chief" was widely used many years ago, as a general term, such as "mate". My father used it regularly to anyone whose name he didn't know, e.g. in a shop, buying a newspaper, "thanks chief". I certainly have never viewed the use of this term even vaguely racist.
