I have just hijacked this from Gary Weston's site it does make interesting reading but draws no conclusions.

Thank you for this very informative link which I have just read.

My own conclusion is as i expected.

The Political road to settlement is clear. The opportunity is right here right now.

Failure this time could result in a long unfruitful period of stale mate.

The EU and the UK need to join with the UN and drive the talks forward with more financial incentives.

Thankfully no frustrating pedantics about civil litigation and non recognition of TRNC.

Lets all get on the same rope and pull for peace and settlement.

I totally agree having read the document. The atmosphere and climate is different this time round. The prize is to great for failure and has the document states Christofias has the full support of the oppostion Greek party. Both men will go down in history. I hope and believe it will happen before NC elections

Izzet,

Would it be possible to turn this post into a sticky so that it could be used as a reference point for future posts,

Regards,

Paul.

Dear Newlad re msg 6

Re the "sticky"

But spare Linus' embarrassment by the insertion of CYPRIOT ( as in Greek Cypriot) when referring to the DISY opposition party...

Referring to GREEKS in the context of Cyprus means real GREEKS from Greece..

Dear Dee re msg 13

What I said was that the report sat on the fence, didn't mention the Court cases re property - Orams - and the POTENTIAL| consequences for EU citizens buying in "TRNC" ( which seems strange) and understated the level of GC National Guard and to a lessor extent TR troops..

Yep, I guess you would categorise that as "rubbishing" ;)

Dee

Sorry for repeating what you had already done. I had read the thread in question before you had posted & had not been back to it.

the report should definitely be read

and it is pretty even-handed but there are just one or two

very SMALL things I'm not sure about

the report says any future invasion of the north by the south

is more of a psychological factor than any realistic possiblilty:

with the very greatest of respect, local history teaches us unerringly

but for one well-known factor they'd come and see our friends in the north,

like the proverbial rat up a drainpipe

the report talks glowingly about the hundreds of millions of euros pumped in

but I thought this was currently all blocked though I cannot recall by whom

the report does not fully address the issue of the direct trade regulation passed in 2004 but thwarted by devious means

this well-intentioned consultation is good at describing what should-be

but is candid enough to examine faithfully the complexities and disagreements

of the current situation without actually predicting the inevitable impasse
