They keep the big flies out, and the big mosquito but not the sandflys. The sandfly can get in as the holes in the fly screens are not small enough to keep them out. As most of us know the sandfly is a big problem here. If the fly screens can only keep the bigger flies and crawlies out then surely the fly screen is not serving its proper purpose. Smaller mesh is required here!

Granted an open door is an opportunity for anything to come in. We asked a fly screen fitter if it would keep the sandfly out because having seen the size of the holes in the mesh we could see that it would'nt keep them out. His reply was a sheepish no, but you can spray some repellent on the mesh which might help to deter them. Getting more expensive by the minute, fly screens, insect repellents.

Don't want to give any names as it usually goes down the road of personal slatings on this forum. His craftsmanship does not warrant being slated..

So anybody any ideas as to what does keep sandflies out? Almost feel like putting 'sandflies' on the thread of things that frustrate me about N. Cyprus.......

If you put your air con on and make the bedroom like a fridge (with windows & doors shut) it paralyses the little buggers but as soon as room warms up they start biting again! Best to just smother yourself in repellent (whatever works for you) and get a good after bite cream....cos they will get you! nothing surer! Oh and a fan aimed at the bed helps! Maggie

A good spray round, including the bed-clothes an hor before going to bed certainly helps! Best to use one of the non-scented aerosols (bugger the ozone layer!) and just hope that you're not allergic to the spray. I use 'FLUETEX' in the green and white can, with a stick-on label that says 'ÖZEL KOKUSUZ' that means it doesn't smell (MUCH!). Keith.

Plenty of marmite was recommended to us. Used it last year, works great although makes a right mess of the bed sheets.
