yes referendum same as last time.

Cane anyone tell me who is responsible for negotiations post election if opposition win as expected. Talat negotiated in 2004 but was pm then so will Talat stand down in favour of new pm. My understanding is president is mainly figurehead with power held by parliament. Also how can negotiations work if pm and president hold differant views on what outcome should be?

Hi mmmm

Article is about lawyer arrested for people smuggling. Not sure what the connection is?

Can anyone advise how elections impact current talks?

Hi Icecaps

Apparently the negotiations contunue as normal. Talat as President is the leader of the negotiations and will stick to his mandate. Supposedly the ruling party can make reccommendations but cannot overule the Preseident. Presidential elections do not take place until 2010.

A recent KADEM poll cited Talat as being the most courageous politician in the TRNC.

The above is my interpretation of an article I read. I may have misread it and someone else on this forum may have paid more heed to the intricate details, and hence correct my assertion.

Sorry, that only take you to the front page. Click on 'news' on the left and you'll see this heading - Where do we want to be in a year?

If Talat doesn't get re-elected will the talks cease?

Hi Bill

Depends who gets in.

I think though their needs to be some sort of settlement even if it is a negotiated divorce.

Thanks to mmm and others for pointing me to Cyprus Mail article. It covers situation well. still wonder how we can have situation where pm and president pulling in differant directions. This will become even more evident ahead of any referendum.

If the UBP get in, then we have to assume that their will be differences between PM and Preseident. In reality, as you say, they can't pull in different directions and inevitably this situation would become unworkable.

Depends of course on what Turkey also wants. It seems that Talat may have built quite a good relationship with the Turkish leaders
