Well rowlo for me the only complaints so far is that we are so let down by both builders and advocates.

If they would only learn some basic customer skills they would clean up other than that no issues.

It was an own goal by the GC's that led to me buying in the TRNC. Too long to explain here but had a holiday in the ROC and could not believe the anti TC rhetoric spouted off by some of the 'responsible' people that were tasked with educating us about Cyprus history. I found out the realities for myself and decided to take my holidays in the North and it became my country of residence. So there you go, I knew nothing about about the North or about the problems of Cyprus prior to my 'education' by the GC's.

So thank you the Republic Of Cyprus.

Ok...I'll be the first to be honest.....it was 50% cheaper than Languedoc or Andalucia.

Simple as that !

Rowlo....No not at all.

I never saw it as an investment.....property will only go up in value after a positive "settlement"....so i've never been holding my breath !

I would be happy if it just never lost money.

I bought and took a risk in NC because I could not afford what I wanted elsewhere.

I bought because of the weather and it is so refreshingly different from the UK.Spent some time in the RoC,but dont like Blackpool in the sun and drunken UK youths exposing themselves in certain resorts.I'm told thats still trial by ducking stool up 'ere!

Lived and worked in the ROC, visited the north prefer the quiet, Cypriots seemed to be friendly north or south to me, north less developed so got more for my money.

However now disappointed mainly by the builder they seemed to be able to get away with anything with no recourse. So stuck, having to keep renting when I have an apartment paid for and not finished.... Still one day perhaps.........

We were going to buy in Dubai but a friend who has a Villa in TRNC suggested we visit, we did for 3 weeks it was all we needed to realise that the TRNC was the place we should buy, the people were/are great and very friendly with lots of advice from both expats and locals whilst we where going through the viewing period. Also we could afford to buy for cash and not over commit, we got a lot more for our money than we would of in Dubai. The TRNC is the only place I have been in the world where I can really relax and my wife felt this too the place has a feel about it that is hard to put into words. I work internationally and it seems to be a place where I can leave my wife behind for a month at a time and not have to worry about her safety, can't say that about our other homes in UK, Russia and Bulgaria now can I. I only wish we had known about the TRNC years ago and maybe we would not of wasted so much time getting there and we would have 3 less homes!!! Ronaldo sums it up nicely.

We are not bothered about whether the value goes up or down. We just fell in love with this part of the world. Have friends in the south that have been over and they also see why this place is just brill.

Ronaldo is spot on.

Peace and love !

Obviously cost of property but like some other posters, lived in south and got sick of the lying rhetoric and decided to find out for myself, found the ppl to be far more genuine, less aggressive, infact quite gentle...and altho my first move here wasnt successful but very glad I came back.

Hi TheSaints, After reading your post it sounds very similar to the way we are living. My husband works away in Russia he does a month on and then gets a month off. I also feel quite safe out here when hubby is away and really enjoy the pace of life. We too have a place in the UK and also in Bulgaria aswell. Oh and by the way we live in Alsancak too.

Property prices. Came in 2005 for a holiday with the idea of buying a small apartment purely as an investment. Fell in love with the country, the people and the available sites with fabulous views, for half the cost elsewhere. Ended up by the end of the week we had bought a 4 bed villa with a pool which I will probably never sell.

Must say can't wait to experience life in the TRNC. Still waiting for our villa to be completed, nearly three years since I signed the contract!

Living in Bulgaria at the moment and would thoroughly recommend that as well. Cheap living, friendly people beautiful country. If you know anyone who would like peace and tranquility we have our Bulgarian idyll for sale with land and large pool, 4 beds etc. etc. in peaceful village. We had intended to have an adventure for 2 years here and 2 years in TRNC before going back to Blighty. Unfortunately we are'nt getting younger and this is too big for us now. So folks if you want or know someone who would like a bargain then please contact me.

Regards to all

Thought it would be nice to have our 'Place in the Sun' without getting in debt for it.

Realised the implications and I suppose like everyone else took a gamble. If it pay's off, all well and good. If it doesn't then we'll look back and say that we had some great holidays, met some great people and wished that we hadn't have done it!

We fell in love with the place, the people, the cost of living (5 years ago very cheap) Things have gone up, but then they have everywhere. I just love waking up in the morning to the sunshine, the sea and the mountains. I just love everything about the place and wouldn't go back to live in UK.

Way I see it,was only a gamble if looking for a return on invested capital.

Presuming you dont want to sell, then the end result is the same as not being able to sell.

For those that go a few times a year till retiring, then you have spent say £100k on a holiday home you see 3 times a year.If you cant sell and dont return then all that has happened is that you have lost accomodation for a couple of times per year. Not really much of a downside compared to the possible upside(roll on the election)

I only speak for myself and in no way wish to minimise the problems some have run into ,especially those that have sold up for a new life, think their treatment is disgusting and hope eventually their problems are resolved ,

A tad 'I'm alright Jack' ?

The 'wrongs' can be life & health shattering and there are all too many examples of that unfortunately. They can never be 'outweighed by the good' until they have been put right.

Not bothered if we dont make any money out of our apartment as we bought it as a holiday home firstly with a view to moving out there in the not too distant future. We will just be happy not to loose it.

Hi debdebs at last another couple doing it for the same reasons and in similar circs, we are normal after all well ish, another reason is my wife being Russian, Tatar and me being Brit it it hard nowadays to find somewhere where they will let us both in the country without too much immigration hassles, this was also another deciding factor when looking to buy. TRNC opened the door to both of us.

Hector

I am the last one to diminish what some have gone through.I meant that for ME and my own case the good still outweighs the bad .

If you look back on my previous postings you will find I have never hidden my head in the sand, and along with others have been criticised for not towing the party line of "If you dont like being ripped off ,go back to the UK" or "its your own fault because,1, you shouldnt have used sterling,2,You didnt speak Turkish 3, You complained and you upset the lawyers and builders.4,Who care its sunny and the castle is nice, etc etc"

You will also note I have never blamed the problems in the north on the GC's but place the blame squarely on the (non) legal system in the north that allows these abuses.

You are right, I have not been robbed of my savings, but I can fully understand the pain, especially when the best advice from some is not to whinge,so I beg you, please do not confuse me with the alright Jacks.

Hi Saints,

Reading your msg I realised that we first went on holiday to TRNC for the same reason. My wife's Ukrainian passport was accepted there. Now we have a problem. She has UK citizenship and wants to see all the places she couldnt see before. But now we have a completed house in Esentepe//Bahceli which cost a lot of money! So far we are doing long weekends in between visits to TRNC and semi retirement is 2 1/2 years away! We will have to start a Russo/TRNC/UK girls meeting. They all seem to like a long chat as my phone bill proves! Thank God for Skype!
