For those of who who don't know I'm a "sailing nut" and followed the single handed Round the world yacht race that - the Yachting equiv of Climbing Everest.. http://vendeglobe.org/en This is the race that put Ellen Macarthur on the map.. when she nearly beat the favourite.. http://www.ellenmacarthur.com/ Now at least THREE competitors appear to have hit mammals or submerged containers - losing keels, rudders and resulting in near loss of life.. So, imagine my surprise when I read this am that two "man made mammals" - two Nucs have collided...A French and Brit sub...:0 HOW can this happen? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7892294.stm The possible consequences aren't worth thinking of..

All that state of the art equipment on board and all that ocean space (it was the Atlantic I believe) it really does make the mind boggle!!! Imagine a radioactive leak in that vast ocean? The damage to the enviroment would be unthinkable........

It's amazing that these two craft could collide in the Atlantic. I suspect though that the ships hulls are built to withstand quite a sizeable impact. I watched a programme last night about the technology behind the airbus 380 and how it is built to withstand impact. The technology was based on the mongolian bow developed in the 12th century. Fascinating stuff.

I think it shows our Governments have been spending out Taxes wisely on Technology! £Bn's have gone into stealth & anti-radar detection. Last week it was 2 satellites colliding, now 2 Nuke Subs. Well done Q!! It obviously works!! Rob

Surely this happened because the vessels were both performing evolutions on exercise together. I reckon a cover up is going on and the Admiralty is sh*tting ıtself because they are both nuke boats. Minor collisions happen all the time in naval exercises - but never while I was offıcer-of-the-watch!

Macha your no. 10. It's a big ocean and a bigger coincidence that they were both in the same place at the same time. We might find that the boats weren't on exercise together but were winding each other up. Both boats have active sonar to detect each other but that gives the game away. Passive sonar is what they might have been using to find each other and they just got closer than they bargained for.
