As there was so much interest in the Slingbox, I have set up on on a UK Freeview receiver ( BT Vision) - you'll need that to set up correctly.

Nige , Gooligan and Andy showed the earliest interest in being guinea Pigs.

You can go to

http://downloads.slingmedia.com/go/slingbox-desktop-uk

Download the software for your Operating System and contact me when you need the Slingbox ID and password.

It is LEGAL as only one user can access the unit at one time..

Even with the latest software and firmware I still think you need 1.5 - 2 Meg to view full screen - and I can only give you 250 - 350 upload.. But this will be part one of the test..

Later we can try a faster upload site..

IF we can get this to work, I'll rent out the boxes connections.. It will work on SKY +, and you should be able to view on your mobile phone!

Slingbox works OK at full screen on 800kbps, so you need a 1 meg download connection uncontended (dedicated) here and 1 meg upload connection uncontended (dedicated) in the UK.

Not as good a picture as VPN connection to BBC i Player or ITV and with these, bandwidth usage is fractionally less and you are still able to view live TV. However, check for bandwidth restrictions on your VPN

All this is available here in the TRNC from a local (registered) company.

You can get BBC i player, USA TV, plus others if you perform a hide IP address

procedure.

Download speeds prohibit instant streaming but TRNC Transmission speeds allow you to archive.

There is an Israeli supplier of software on tinternet.

Google "Hide IP address"

Dear Waz re msg 9

Hidng an IP address is NOT enough in most cases - you have to SHOW a UK P address.

Littlenige,

mmmmmm already mentioned that he could only give 250-350 kbps upload.

It just won't work - you need 1Mbit upload speed at the other side.

Hi Washerman, re msg 12

When Nige connected my ADSL internet connection was performing like a 14.4 modem dial up.. luckily we have two, so I used t'other one. I note that when using slingbox on my wireless network - to watch tv in another room, I need 1.5 - 2 megs..and if I run full screen... :(

I approached Virgin Media - re a deal for a faster connection - at a friend's place - I am limited to ADSL - and they offer max 500 kps ( 0.5 msgs) max and I would be throttled back for heavy use..

Trying to look at a provider that supplies better upload for business application..

Will advise Nige and co will I move the slingbox to the new test location..

For now it is still:

1/ 4.2m dish

2/ UK VPN..

3/ "naughty" file sharing sites..

in order of preference..

I won't give up..

The idea is very good the quality here at my end is not watchable, if it is going to be available at a modest cost I am sure it could take off especially if it is possible to connect your pc to the tv.

I can with an Archos Machine, or if you have a large screen monitor ( this may need better uploadspeed ?)

I get uk tv programs next day superb quality via http://www.thebox.bz and http://www.uknova.com.

They may not be legal so far as copyright is concerned but we live in an illgal state , buy goods imported illegally, get dvds from dvd shop illegally so does it matter ??

Dear Nige, they AREN'T as good as with original source and with a VPN you can watch it LIVE.. ;0

BTW did you see Channel 5 last night? CSKA Moscow v the "Clarets" from Brum ;)

Best football match I've seen for ages well since I saw Spain give England a lesson - Speed, quality, drama

You can always watch it today ;) ..Much better when you DON'T know the score..

Watch out for LOVE.. the Brazilian with the blue hair ;)

re msg 16 , Nige

VPN = virtual private network

Once logged on to GOOD one you appear to be located in the country where that server is located..

FAR more reliable than poxy ( sorry, proxy servers) and "anonymous" IP masks ( hiding one's ip)

IF you had one you'd be able to watch Tottenham play the Ukrainian boys from Donetsk on something like http://uktvcatchup.com

You could even email me for a 24 hr trial... ;)

Your chq is in the post, Nige.......

mmmmmm,

You and I are in competition here and I apologise to you because, if Littlenige decides to pursue this, I am sure that he would rather support the local economy by dealing with a local company. It's unfortunate for you, but this puts you at a distinct disadvantage.

Dear Washerman, re msg 18

I don't have "competition" only opposition ;)

If I was "punting for biz" I'd hardly be on here telling potential clients that most of 'em don't really own the land their houses are on ;)

You should be "safe"...!

Out here this usually means pay more under the misapprehension you are supporting the trnc .

What it Usually means is another silly Brit paying through the nose.

Why coz the government puts silly import duties on stuff making the locally economy more expensive.

Another reason is GREED

Lamb in turkey is sold at 14 -18 ytl per kilo here 23 -28 per kilo and the farmers get the same as in turkey apros 7 ytl per kilo Greed on the part of retailers.

Dear Washerman. re msg 23

I chose not to "go there" ..

I'm not punting for biz.. I wanted willing Guinea Pigs who I knew or trusted, who could prove a theoretical point I was making...

I "Extend" to you the offer to "drop" the subject, as you've already made me smile, by thinking being in the "TRNC" will be of benefit to clients who would be relying on a service that is heavily "up" end dependent ..

I'm not interested in "working you out".. don't be "offended" ;)

Washerman,I dont require any more sentences, your emails have provided me all the ammunition I need, thank you very much.

It makes me laugh that you offer these 'services',considering you dont know the difference between a 1Mbit connection and a fig roll.
