Hi there

I am staying in Limassol for a weeks vacation- flying out this Sunday. I was wanting to travel to bella bais monestry and Kyrenia as a day trip. I was planning to drive to the Ledra Palace crossing, walk and get a taxi.

(as my rental excluded me form crossing into N.Cyprus)

Was wondering if there was a taxi rank once i crossed at Ledra Palace?

Also how much are taxi rates in N.Cyprus?

Could i book a taxi for the day?

Also, is it safe to leave my rental on a side road near the crossing?

Help! A confused and excited traveller!

Once you are in Northern Cyprus there will be plenty of taxi's.

I think it would be rather expensive to hire a taxi for the day, I'm sure you could find a car hire company willing to rent just for one day.

I think you will pay at least 60EURO for a return from Ledra to Kyrenia, or just keep flaging down taxi as and when required, they are all on meter's (or should be)

I have, in the past, rented for one day only from Baspinar rentals opposite Astro in Girne. 00903928157106. Found them very helpful and reasonably priced. W

Call IBOTAXI 00905428514936

Ibo will, either quote you for a day's taxi hire or alternatively a hire car for a day. I would imagine hiring a car for the day would be the best option economically. However, if you need to see the places in just one day and need direction, a taxi might be your best option. Either way Ibo will give you very fair rates.

Good luck and enjoy.

Walk across get a Dolmus to Kyrenia or to Famagusta by the time you have done that and maybe wondered around Nicosia you will work out that you need a lot more than a day in North Cyprus and you will come back for more.

Dear Loonooo1

You'll need to leave Lima(s)sol early to avoid the traffic at rush hour and you should get to the crossing point of choice EARLY... I've turned up at 2 am and the TC on duty kindly rang up a guy who appeared in minutes and took me to the airport in an old Merc stretch limo for £10 ( ok that was 5 yrs ago .. )

How will you get to the green line.. and if by car I'd suggest crossing at Ledra Palace or Ledra Street.. neither are easy to find without local knowledge.

Hope you get a clear day- the views are great from Bellapais .. Try and take some Turkish Lira - from an ATM. You won't be able to change it back in the "rump" RoC ( south)

Enjoy.

Would agree with msg 5. might be better getting to the ledra street crossing and walk throught the old town. Once outsidde the main gate turn left and walk for about 3/4 a mile straight and the dolmus station is ( a piece of waste ground ) on the left. Dolmus into Kyrenia (Girne) . then you would have till about 7 pm for the last dolmus back. much cheaper and avoids having to drive in unfamiliar roads

you dont need to change money as almost everywhere takes £, $, € (been here almost 6 years and never had a problem - ever). Try to spend all your change here as the GC's dont like anything Turkish.

HI

Thanks for all your replies they have been really helpful. Yes, I am def driving to Nicosia and crossing on foot.

Was wondering which crossing is better to go across if we decide just to wonder around Northern Nicosia for a while.

Also How long, and how much to Kyrenia with a Dolmus ( which i assume is a bus..? Do they run regularly to and from Kyrenia...???

So many questions so little time LOL!!

Also....where is the best place to leave my car in Southern Nicosia...is there anywhere safe near the Ledra Palace crossing...???

Message 7 - So traffic in Nicosia is really bad...??? Was hoping to try and get to Nicosia for 9ish. What time would you suggest leaving Limassol...??? Surley wouldn't take more than an hour...???

After reading all the replies... i wonder if it isn't just worth booking the dreaded package coach day trip to N.Cyprus..... which i was trying to avoid!!!

Ledra street crossing takes you straight into the Market area. Take the second left and follow directly the road to the main gates.Dolmus about 4YTL last time I used it. journey is about twenty to thirthy minutes depending on traffic.

Sounds like you have taken up the advice in Message 6 - good value and as long as you get the timing right for the return to Nicosia (last dolmus and all that) probably the best way. You will I'm sure be over again maybe frequently.

Hi Loon0001

re msg 11

I used to commute to Nicosia every day - and would have willingly lived in Kyrenia if there'd been a settlement in 2004.. but didn't want to queue to cross every day..

IF you don't get to Nicosia centre by 7.30 don't bother living Limassol until 8.30.. you'll just be in a long queue...

A "Dolmus" is like a mini bus..The destination is on a card on display.

I'd recommend parking at Ledra Palace -south side.. parking is cheap near the taxi rank, and the walk over is more interesting - to me.. The no mans land effect...

You are more likely to get totally lost in the Old city if you try to park near Ledra Street.

What you are trying to do is tiring.. the coach trip is NOT as crazy as it sounds :(
