I had both feet done about 15 years ago Liz, don't really recommend it unless you really really need it doing. Very painful and a long time recovering, also one came back a few years later so had to have it done again, Thought I'd end up with pretty feet but have to say they are worse now than before I had em done. Sorry, not the positive response you probably wanted - mind you everyone's different and technique may have improved now!

Hallux Valgus , The Op is very painful . There is a sort of strap you can get , i ordered one from a supplement i got with some magazine . It sort of re-aligns your big toe , you use it at night , and surprise surprise it does actually work to some degree if you use it regularly , mine were less painful .

Good luck , Simbas

Have to agree with Maggie&Bernie...unless you are in absolute agony and there is no alternative for you I would consider other options.

I have had 4 major ops in my life and have to say the bunion op was the most painful of the lot!

I had the op on one bunion in 2007 and was off work for 3 months due to the swelling and pain. When I did returned to work I had no option other than to wear flipflops for a further 9 months as I could not put a pair of shoes on.

9 months later I was admitted as an emergency to undergo corrective surgery as I had a trapped nerve under the scar tissue on my foot.

Another 3 months off work which believe me was hard in itself as I am one of those people who cannot sit still for 5 minutes!!

2 years down the line the bunion is back.....worse than before and still painful.

Would I go through another bunion op?

Not in a million years!

a Big THANK YOU to Puppylover and Maggie for replying to this.

I went to Cyprus life yesterday was told 20 mins simple OP with one day in Hospital and not able to walk for a week and 3 months later second foot could be done.

I have decided not to have it done now as I can walk fine but just wanted to get into a nice pair of shoes again,, oh well.

I had bunions removed from both feet about 6 years ago and have never looked back. It is true it is a very painful procedure and it takes a good couple of months to heal etc. but it has it's benefits, being able to wear nice shoes without having the painful pressure of the bunions, I also don't have to change to slippers as soon as I get home. My bunions have not grown back but if they did I would have the op again, being able to walk comfortably in shoes far out ways a few weeks of discomfort.

Mes 9

Very sensible decision, not to have this done, one of the most painful ops you can have, and you have been told a porkie by the hospital. Have witnessed this operation many years ago in an orthopaedic hospital and nursed the patient afterwards. They actually used a large hammer and chisel in those days, probably still do.

Recovery time is very long as said before.

Afterthought:

As I've already seen it done, I could do it for you, can you produce a large hammer and chisel and a cheque for £4000 in advance????

Well it's nice to hear a happy ending Ladyinwaiting & I'm so glad your ops turned out fine. Maybe, as I said, surgical techniques have improved since I had mine done. All I can say is I wished I'd just gone out and bought some wide fitting sensible shoes instead of having the bunions done - as my feet are much worse now than before the ops!

I had both feet operated on seven years ago. Local anesthetic, 20 minute op, no plaster cast just lots of padding and surgical boot. Not allowed to weight bear for two weeks, used crutches, then into trainers and walk, build it up each day. No driving for four weeks

Six weeks off work both times, no pain as anesthetic was enough to allow the paracetemol and ibuprofen to kick in and be maintained.

Scars are not noticeable, I can wear any type of shoe now and best of all NO MORE PAIN!!
