In another thread an important aspect of the Cyprus problem came up at least from my perspective. In this thread http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/10904.asp Juliet said "want we all want ... is justice for ALL Cypriots" When I asked what form justice should take for the abuduction and murder of my uncle by illegal para militaries run from the Interior ministry of the RoC in 64 her reply was "sorry erolz but attrocites were done by both sides, its called war....cyprus has to move forward & put the past into the history books where they belong. " This exchange to me highlights one of the key problems in terms of reaching an agreed settlement and also highlights a key GC world view. From this GC perspective the argument is that the Cyprus problem as it exist today is one related solely to the events of 1974 onwards. That all that needs to be done is to rectify the injustices that came from the events of 74 and the 'problem' is solved.

One can see this world view over and over comming from GC and thier supporters like 'Macha'. The list of 'unbiased' source material 'Macha' gave re understanding the Cyprus problem is on example of many I could give of this GC perspective. The problem with such an approach is that it simply will not work as far as finding an agreed solution to the Cyprus problem. In reality when people like Juliet say they want justice for all cypriots what they mean is they want justice for all cypriots re the events of 74 onwards but they want no justice for any Cypriots for events prior to 74. At the simplest level the TC community bore the brunt of the Cyprus problem from 63-74 and the GC from 74 onwards. Its way more complex of course but in general terms this is true. When one limits justice to applying to 74 onwards one takes a GC perspective of justice and a solution. Such a one sided approach will never lead to agreement unfortunately :(

This is absolutely right, and the core reason why it would never make sense for the TC's to agree to the demands of the GC's. The reason for the recognition of Kosovo is the eventual international acceptance that the Serbs will never forgive the involement of the Croats and others with the Nazi's during the war Once Turkey pulls out (or is asked to leave) the EU discussions, then perhaps TRNC can get on with progress towards a flourishing independant state...

Erolz and MM Very well put. The political landscape continues to change and rapidly moves forward. It is unfortunate that several forum members seem intent upon restitution for what is clearly history. It is a shame and sad that these same people see no further than the bitterness left by historical events and seek political and legal justification to continue the fight. It is imperative that both sides practice compromise, co-operation, respect and convergence. A solution is possible if people want it. The fight will continue also if people want it. What is certain. If the fight continues. A minority of individuals may see victory whilst Cyprus will be defeated.

Well thought out post Erolz. I agree that history only appears to be selective and only starts in 1974 in Cyprus........according to the more glaucomatous views on this forum. The actual history of Cyprus is nearly 10000 years long and in reality, much more complex than a forum post could do justice to. Just allowing the people from '74 onwards to..............."have their money back".......let's say, really ignores the rest of the atrocities that preceded this and the ethnic cleansing. What we must ask ourselves is......does, having land taken from you in "war"(as Juliet sates) rank as being worse from a HR point of view ,than having your relatives murdered and your compatriots coralled into a minute area? Only a real hypocrite would agree that the land issue is more important !

Dear Erolz, re msg 1 "justice for all Cypriots" Depends what Justice means to you.. Normally, settlements bring about a suitable climate for "Truth and Reconciliation Committees".. hitherto "secret" info comes out re actions of those who held power, those committing atrocities and the whereabouts of the remains of those murdered. Justice for all Cypriots won't come about while there are those - especially those who stand to lose out - try to kep the current status quo. That for some is "Justice" .. "to the victor goes the spoils".. I seem to remember ! The legal actions doing the rounds are a counter to the non-movement politically.
