I am both English and British as I am both TC and Cypriot. English is to me one 'category' of British and TC one 'category' of Cypriot. It is for me not a case of either or.

English is my nationality of birth and having traced ancestry back to about 1750 on both sides of family I think that covers all bases.

Remember going to USA about 20 years ago, you could put Scottish or Welsh on the visa but not English had to be British or UK.

Bit confused me. Born in London and lived here all my life. My parents are Irish and I have a british Passport. I love this country and love being a Londoner. (accent n'all)

Am I English as the place of my birth....am I British as my parents are from Ireland and I was born in England, or am I Irish. Can anyone sort this out.?

No silly replies are needed.

Turtle: "You are not allowed to be English anymore, Welsh can be Welsh And Scots can be Scots but English fraid not."

For the decent and proud English people - who have no doubts about their nationality - this may a good thing as it weeds out the undesirables and riff-raff who give England a bad name all over the world.

Err,...

Who were you cheering in the Olympics?

Great Britain!

Ireland was there as a foreign country, but Wales, Scotland or NI weren't. They were classed as 'British'.

If any of you say you are 'Irish', 'Welsh', Scotish',.... do you have an Irish, Welsh, Scottish or British passport?

You are either British or ROI (foreigners!)

Get over it!

p.s.tiggy, were your parents ROI or NI?

Dear RobnJo re msg 38

The soln to the Irish problem was to allow folk born on the island of Ireland to be Irish - obtain an Irish passport - if wanted - or be British - if born in N.Ireland or of British parentage or be BOTH... I have two passports..may be I might be Russian one day, too ;)

I can happily cheer for Ireland at Rugby, Northern Ireland at Football or Ireland or team GB at the Olympics.. ;)

I REALLY wish that they wouldn't call it GB as technically that does NOT include N.Ireland ... back to semantics again

Now *I'd* like to se a CYPRUS football team and a Cyprus person win Eurovision - preferably a TC scoring a winning goal at a world cup game against TR or GR or TC winning the "singing" cup....

Do you mean semantics or pedantics?

You may have your aspirations to be an itenerant world class person, but currently you are only internationally accepted as being of a certain nationality.

Hi No.1 Doyen, re msg 46

I can remember the Loyalist "outrage" at Dana - from Londonderry / Derry singing and WINNING for Eire ;)... and the "threats" to Eddie Irvine as he drove for Eddie Jordan's F1 team and got a podium and the Irish flag was flown...:o

re msg 45

"Do you mean semantics or pedantics? " - very good ;)

I am accepted as Irish or British - you can ask any immigration officer I've "confused" - esp one's in former Soviet Countries.. If I'm in "trouble" in the UK.. I'm British and Irish if arrested in Dublin ..;)

My Birth certificate was issued in Belfast - but the Irish accpted it for my Irish passport - in the same way my Grandad was born in "Britain", but as we couldn't find his original BRITISH Birth certificate it had to be re-issued by the IRISH, as were he was born is now in Eire...;)

All clear .....? !

My Father was born in Ireland in the part that is now known by some as Northern Ireland. He and the family had to go to live in Mayo in Eire when 1 year old. Land was taken from them after being hounded out. He came to work in England at the age of 15 and passed away in 1999 my mother was born in Tipperary.

Confuses the issue even more.

Hope the old homestead is being looked after, as one day it may well be returned to the rightful owners!!!

It IS Northern Ireland and even the constitution of Eire accepts this for as long as the majority of folk there wish it..

If they ever vote to become part of Eire - I will respect that...

Can you ask for my G.Grandad's land back in county Longford, as well, please.. ?

I am most definately English. Born and bred in London.

British can mean anything....going back to the British Empire we once had!

Ask a Scot or welshman their Nationality, And you no what their answer will be.....it definately wont be British!

When it comes to Rugby in UK...Its Either , England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, So why can we not call ourselves English?

I class this as prejudice and racists that we are not allowed to call ourselves English!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mmmm. Was you great grandfather and all before him born in Ireland. Where did he move too ? ( I feel you may be making it up to make out your lot has been hard done by as well!)

As for the majority.......when one side is forced from the land i n the past and were by far the majority, along with the youth forced abroad to find work whilst jobs for the boys and a bias to rat catchers (RC's) ruled the land no wonder real people were treated as 2nd class citizens.

When Ireland....Ireland was partitioned and the British kept the 6 counties which was then filled with the likes of Private Pike and other lunatic scots no wonder it all blew up. The day the majority of the electorate become nationalist will be the day that Paisley and his gang will move the goal posts again........when he said "NEVER" he meant it.

Ever seen the film "Captain Boycott"......sums it all up.

Enough of history lessons from both of us I think

P..

Of my four Grandparents one couple were English and the other a Scottish /Eire couple.

I consider myself English proudly part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There is no word for UKish unfortunately.

In my opinion all inhabitants of the British Isles are british even those from the island of Ireland. As it therefore does not refer to a unitary nation state the word British is not an accurate description!

Oh come on Harold, you can't be serious re message no 57!

The British Isles is a geographical term ( and rarely used these days) not a political one and the Republic of Ireland is certainly not British nor are its citizens! People in Northern Ireland can be either British or Irish and are entitled to either or both passport. However people from the Republic of Ireland are Irish and only hold Irish passports.

Regards,

Irish and proud!

Dear Tiggy, re msg 56

Hmm, seems to be the day for folk doubting what I say / write.. G.Grandad was a sarg in the RIC and had 11 kids.. they had lived in what is now Eire WAY before the "planters"..

Me Ma's Dads' side originated from Huguenots.. and her Ma, can be traced back to the "Planted one's"

I think you will be buying a few Paddy's / Jameson's and Guinness... as a "penalty"..

the british isles consists of four countries england scotland ireland and wales all proud nations but in times of conflicts has come together as one united nation great briton it is the right of all british people to proud of there heritage as english scottish irish or welsh but today it more important with the number of immigrants (sorry if this sounds racist) demanding certain rights both religious and political that we remember that we are british and defend our britishness or it might not be the place it was

Hi Tiggy, Orla and Lilli,

I'm Irish too. Lucan, south Dublin. Have travelled the world on an Irish passport... no problems. As you say Lilli, accepted cordially everywhere (Irish Passport). My husband on the other hand travelled on a British passport and sometimes had questions asked whilst entering or leaving countries.

I believe the question was thrown open to the forum rather than only to the English or British hereon. This in reply to msg 70. Yes littlenige, I can read... in fact I read quite a lot into your continuously negative posts...

Hello Frank,

I have Driven through Lucan many a time....heading out West to the wild frontier of Mayo! mind you that was before the bypass was built. Long drive up to Holyhead and usually a rough crossing. We let Ryanair take the strain these days, Leixlip, Enfieds and Maynooth all stage coach stops!

Dear Charlie55 re msg 75

"the british isles consists of four countries england scotland ireland and wales"

Who was your Geography teacher?

FIVE nations make up the "British Isles" .. FOUR make up the UK, THREE make up GB

I hope the irony of us discussing retaining "Britishness" on a Cyprus forum is not lost on us....

Well....

My comment in 57 was not designed to upset the Irish amongst our numbers so apologies to any offended.

My purpose was to show that the term British and even Great Britain is mis used as rather more plainly detailed by MM.

It is the justification for the use of the terms English Scotttish Welsh and Irish when people describe themselves rather than British.

It was when I was a nipper that this was drawn to my attention by of all things the International version of It's a knockout, Jeux sans Frontieres. The UK was being represented by a team from Northern Ireland who couldn't therefore where the normal GB vest. It stuck with me better than any geography lessons!

Come on being English these days is essentially a state of mind - many aspire to it, but you do not have to be born there to achieve it

We English do not need to bang on about being English - that is the need of people from 'smaller' nations who are inherently insecure

AS for Britain - greatest empire the world has ever known - nuff said. It was just run and organised by the roduct o the English public school system...

Dear Charlie55 re 78

you said :

"the british isles consists of four countries england scotland ireland and wales.. "

you forgot NORTHERN Ireland or left off the NORTHERN, if you meant N.I... very important - especially to the maj. of folk from the top right hand corner! ;)

GB *is* only three countries.. Eng, Scot and Wales

Look at your passport ( if you have a British one) - it says United Kingdom of GB and NI.. !!

Charlie 55, Harold did mention the "British Isles", a term that you will no longer see used in any modern map or atlas. And for info there is no such country as "south ireland", it is the Republic of Ireland, officially known as "Ireland" as on our Irish passports. Just to be clear!

I agree with mmmm about the importance of distinguishing between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, especially when including the former in the UK.

English is derived from England, one would think. But in fact the language name is found long before the country name. The latter first appears as Englaland around the year 1000, and means "the land of the Engle," that is, the Angles. The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes were the three Germanic tribes who emigrated from what is now Denmark and northern Germany and settled in England beginning about the fourth century a.d. Early on, the Angles enjoyed a rise to power that must have made them seem more important than the other two tribes, for all three tribes are indiscriminately referred to in early documents as Angles. they all spoke what would have been called *Anglisc, or "Anglish," as it were. By the earliest recorded Old English, this had changed to Englisc. Thus the record shows that the Germanic were speaking English long before they were aware they were living in England. YOU'RE ALL GERMAN!!!

There'll always be an England,

While there's a country lane.

Wherever there's a cottage small

Beside a field of grain

There'll always be an England

While there's a busy street.

Wherever there's a turning wheel

A million marching feet.

Red, white and blue

Freedom remains

These are the chains

Nothing can break.

There'll always be an England

And England shall be free

If England means as much to you

As England means to me..

We're not Europeans, how can we be? Europe is miles away, over the sea

We're English from England, lets's all be proud. Stand up and be counted, shout it out loud !

Let' s tell Gordon Brown and Brussels too, we're proud of our heritage, not just red, white and blue.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but England in part of the United Kingdom and is part of Europe, geographically and politically. Go to America and most of the people there will consider you a European foreigner, no different from a Belgian or French citizen.
