Back in 1302 the name of my oldest ancestor (in the Dutch city of Delft) was spelled "Doelman" (somewhere someone made an error in a Protestant churchbook and the name is spelled "Doeleman" since). Today "Doelman" in English means (goal)keeper or (goal)tender. But what did it mean in 1302? The first "Doelman" was the warden or manager of the hall where the Delft citizens practised with bow and arrow (and later also with crossbows).

Do you know what your surname means or meant?

To the "Goalkeeper".

Any relation to Edwin Van der Saar? He's Dutch and also a goalkeeper.

As far as I know he can't make maps. So maybe not.

My surname Wickenden is of Anglo Saxon origin. It is a locational name from a "lost place" called Wickenden nr Cowden in Kent. The village of Polefield stands on the site of Wickenden, this was first recorded in 1044.

My surname is Banks,

The word Banks is actually the plural form of the word bank which a capitalised letter B. The word banks is defined as depository financial institutions, or financial institutions which accept deposits and channel the money into the activity of lending. It also refers to the sloping lands, especially the slopes that are situated beside a body of water, such as a river. It also means supplies or stocks of goods which are held in reserve for use in the future, especially in times of emergency.

Where's my bonus?

Hi Cruggs

All I can say is I hope it dates back to the Goldsmiths and not a Blacksmith not very good with a Anvil any more.

Spider who knows with the amount of Smiths out there we could be blood brothers, cheers

I have spent a whole day researching my surname!!

""The Wistful Hunter Living Beside the Limpid Purple Lakes of Obluvion, twixt the Lush Green Mountain Tops and Deep Snow Filled Valleys of a Land Time Forgot,... but with Good Links to the M4 & Heathrow.""

I think it may have lost something in the translation. ;-(
