Seriously Les and Sarah?....you really should have researched this before moving to TRNC.

As AndyP points out....it is pretty much a closed shop...unless you want to work illegally for peanuts and risk getting caught and deported.

Sorry to burst the bubble.

lessarah,

Your best bet is working in the south, which is part of the EU and where you don't need a work permit.

Learning to speak Greek will be a must, as you'll be competing with Asian and Eastern European immigrants many of whom speak Greek and English.

Good luck.

I was going to post earlier about this, but, quite frankly, didn't have the heart. If I had posted, I, too, would have suggested the South.

Best of luck - I fear you'll need it.

Can I just say that while finding work itself might be difficult, to say that being a non-TC will exclude you from getting a work permit is not true. I am on my second work permit and I work with a number of non-TC's who all aquired permits with our company with no difficulties.

So it's not impossible.

i am afraid you will find it difficult to find work legitimately, the work permit office are making it extremely difficult for foreigners to obtain a work permit, they are telling companies to employ Cypriots first, but it is not impossible, and renewing existing work permits seems to be no problem.

macha

there is lots of competition in the south.

i was speaking with an asian girl who was working on the checkout.

she spoke 5 languages and was still working in a supermarket.

she was asking if we knew anyone here who would employ her?

what a waste, she would have been a valuable asset to any business here.

Re MSG 13

I agree there are lots of expats working legal here. But the facts are this. Anyone wanting a new work permit will find it very difficult as the department that issues them has made it quite clear that they do not want to issue them unless there is no other choice. The words they mutter are about taking employment away from TC's as there are so many unemployed.

With regards to your comment "Maybe you two dont want or need a Job", well I am not going into my own personal life on here as it's non of your business but unless you know my life, keep your comments to yourself!!

please look south side. they are not issusing work permits to any forihner. if thet do not only is it social sigorta but also a providence fund for the cypriots who could have had the job, we all know where they work in government and who can blaim them retire at 55 work a couple of hours a day, drink a million coffees and smooke a packet before you even start work. Forget it here

another point on working here. Once you get a 'job' u r then on 3mnth probation, after that they will then consider you for a work permit. My poor daughter worked for company 1 for 3 months They did not pay her, then they went bankcrupt. Job 2 After 2 months boss announced due to recession and cut backs he could no longer employ her. Job 3 has lasted 3 months again promised work permit, but due to limited customers she has again been given notice. And do remember here notice often means you are out of work there and then. Not a week or a months notice next day . So be careful.

After serving 23 years in the British Army I have never come accross such negative and nasty attitudes.

May we add that we have NO intention of working illegally and quite frankly find your comments an insult.

Some members do indeed have a noticeable lack of tact and subtelty.

However, the underlying response to your post IS unfortunately a negative one, whether you like it or not !

I would like to wish this couple the best of luck. They have been brave enough to come to N. Cyprus to live and work. There are obstacles, but with their courage, tenacity and experience, I feel sure they will succeed.

I have met many British ex-pats who are in full-time (legal) occupation, so there is work for the intrepid few.

Take heart Les and Sarah, it is interesting that the negative and some exceedingly hostile comments seem to be from people who have difficulty speaking the English language, not to mention spelling the words. Fortunately for them, they aren't looking for work that requires a degree of articulation!

Best of luck in your endeavours.

Although the replies to the question asked by Lessarah were somewhat appropriate . The way some of the posts answered were not . This forum was a friendly informative place where you could find out all sorts of information without ridicule . So what if people don't do their homework before they arrive . It's hardly a hanging matter , people could respond with a little compassion . Naivety is not a crime

Hello Simbas,

It is reassuring to see the civil response you have posted. It is unfortunate that some people have little else to do but make vitriolic statements which I feel sure would be upsetting and demoralising for many people. As for Gates - read his message, I rest my case - proves the point of my first posting adequately!

Hi Lessarah

Ditto... those honestly welcoming you to the forum.

Don't be put off by all the vitriol and negative sentiments, it happens a lot.

Visit the forum frequently and you will soon begin to realise those who like to be so negative... and those who would offer a helping hand/advice

Just remember most members are honest, would wish you well and would help where they can. Somehow I doubt, you being an ex army man, you will be too disheartened by all the slanging above. I am sure you've heard it all before and will cope, you've faced worse?

One tip... is get to know your neighbours T/Cs and ex pats as soon as ...

remember the old saying, it's not what you know but who?

Because I'm sure they will be able to help in pointing you in the right direction.

Best of luck with your new life

Hi Lessarah

Another helpful link for you: http://www.brstrnc.com

This is the British Residence Society in TRNC. They are located in " The Shed " behind the Post Office in Girne and meet every saturday from 10am - noon.

They have another meeting place on a different day but I can't remember info.

I think it is £10 for an annual membership and they have important affiliations

with such things as dentists... a must if you have children etc.

The Society is full of expats and I am sure you could gain both excellent advice and new friends by popping along. If you do... say Hi for me

Les,

Just another thought with you being ex-mil. There are people in Cyprus, north and south, who need someone of good background who they can trust as a personal assistant/aide. If you have a driving licence, your discharge papers and a good CV you could try a bit of canvassing on the grapevine.

Also try the British High Commission followed by UNFICYP, both of whom employ ex-mil and one of whom I've worked for. A civvy post in the Sovereign Base Areas is another possibility. Language skills are desirable for the best positions so try and get to grips with Greek and Turkish. But jobs here really are like hens' teeth so also advertise yourself in the classified adverts and on the internet. And dont forget AARSE - you never know who's logged on and where.

Good luck!

hi both may i wish you all the very best of luck. It is very hard here to get permits etc and the wages are really bad ecpically for someone with your talent. If I were you I would follow Machas advice he is very knowledgeable and offers sound advice which often is misconstrued. You have a wealth of knowledge and would be selling your talents short. So many of my younger friends have gone to Saudi or back as they cant get work here, and whilst they love it here the have to survive. Sign on with agengies south and as ex mil you should have no trouble. Sorry if I sound as negative as some but like everywhere we are also suffering the downturn. I will help you in any way I can if I can. Good luck both

I can get so frustrated at times with this forum, yes you can find full time employment in North Cyprus. I am happily employed with a valid work permit, there is work out there if you want it.

Kitty Kat...

Well said Kitty.

Why not email Lessarah direct... he is not under the anonymity flag... after reading some of these posts I am sure he and sarah would love to hear a friendly voice and perhaps get some valuable pointers from your good self?

If nothing else it will prove how helpful our forum can really be and dampen down your frustration... just a thought
