HI

Can you let me know if your Doctor syringes ears, as mine has been blocked since having the flu at Christmas and all I seem to get is more antibiotics, which I know I don't need, but cant seem to make him understand that they must need syringing, as they wont pop its driving me bonkers. Would the local hospital do this for a fee?

Hi Simbas

Not quite sure, but since having the flu when I was in the UK at Christmas and then flying they just wont pop, usually when you land they clear, they did for about 3 days then blocked again, I know its not an infection so do you know where I could go, not heard of an ENT part in the local Girne Hospital

If there is no wax , they won't be able to syringe . Have you tried holding your nose tightly and blowing ?

I presume your doctor has looked in your ears, if they are not blocked with wax then syringing will not be applicable.

Perhaps your GP keeps giving you antibiotics if he thinks you have otitis media (infection of the middle ear)

A visit to an ENT specialist may be of benefit.

Hope this may be of use.

I've had the same problem recently after a really bad cold which resulted in a sinus infection. Antibiotics cleared up the sinuses but I still had blocked ears with not a jot of wax in sight. So I've been to a pharmacist and got an aqueaous nasal spray called Flixonase which you use once a day and it's really helped. Not sure if they have it in NC but as the sinuses and ears are all connected it might be worth a try.

Lovelife/Simbas Tried all the usual things like holding the nose and blowing, but all I hear is the other ear popping, but my right one will not unblock, when I went to my Doctor he didn't take the time to look just told him my symptoms and he said OH yes an infection so not going back to him again, don't need antibiotics Need a proper Doctor to help me, so that's what I wanted to know whether a Hospital would be a better option.

Many thanks for the info

Syringing of ears for wax build-ups should be avoided wherever possible, as it could simply lead to more and more syringing. Up to date nursing and medical professionals know this.

That's why they recommend using almond (or even olive) oil drops to soften the wax which should in time come out naturally.

I have never had my ears syringed, and have been trying it with warm olive oil drops and it cleared for about 3 days, but after a while it just blocks again, will see how it goes, but I have to be careful when washing my hair and going swimming, not much of the latter at the moment though, but hope it just clears up if not will have to seek advice, many thanks again

There is a very good Ent consultant based at the private hospital at the back of the Pia Bella Hotel, I had your problem and after inspection he syringed my ear, it had been blocked solid with wax.

look for the initials KBB doctor (kulak burun boğaz) at the hospital. ear nose and throat that means. They have a specialist at the lefkosa general hospital.

You could try lying on your side & get someone to drop some Hydrogen Peroxide into your ear, this will dissolve any wax & bubble it up to the surface

I've always used some bicarbonate of soda in some lukewarm water and it's worked for me every time.

There is a fantastic doctor in a village called Vadali (if you come out of Ercan airport turn right at roundabout and keep going straight, pass Gazi koy, then pasa koy, next is Vadali,) the clinic is on the main road on the right hand side. He has a very good reputation and people travel from all over Cyprus to see him. When my dad was over I took him to this doctor and within a day my dad was fine. He charged us 50tl and the second visit was free.

I think its worth the trip.

I used to have loads of problems with my ears blocking with wax, using oil it takes weeks to soften enough, and still not a 100% cure. Syringing worked best, I took to doing it myself with some home made kit because it was difficult to find a doctor or nurse to do it. Then about a year or so ago I found a brilliant ear wax removal device.

It is an extremely simple design - a small stainless steel length of wire with a loop at the end. You insert the loop into the ear canal and pull out the wax. Using a cotton-bud in this manner is dangerous and in-effective because it often forces wax deeper into the ear. With the wire loop this is not possible because the loop allows wax to escape round the side instead of being forced deeper. You are thinking though that the loop is dangerous because it could be inserted too far - but there is a depth limiting stop on it's stem set to the safe insertion distance that prevents excessive insertion.

This has cleared my ears, and other friends/family successfully on numerous occasions. You are more than welcome to borrow it if you wish.

Not sure if I like the idea of a metal hoop being inserted but it sounds like it did the job for you, but I am going to see the ENT this week, as the problem has been ongoing and want to make sure its nothing more than wax, many thanks will get back to you if that doesn't work.

Hi Smithy

I have been reading the posts on problems with blocked ears. I have the same problem after flying in with a heavy cold and wondered how you got on or can anyone recommend a good doctor. I don't know if its the infection or wax that making me blocked but I would like to find out.

Being an old sceptic about any holistic or alternative remedies, I can't believe I'm posting this,.... but,....

For years, my wife & I have had these type of problems especially after heavy colds or flying. We've had syringing at the Doctors, tried proprietary and home eardrop treatments. Nothing really successful.

3 years ago we were introduced to Hopi Ear Candles.

They actually work for us!

Please do research it yourself though.
