Who was It?

Crimestopper: Local Tavern, Sunday 22/02/09 Approx, 22.30 hrs

Mr Britvic's dad John Spensley, a local artist had one of his paintings taken, we suspect that someone had a little too much Efes in this particular Tavern and STUMBLED OUT with the painting.

The oil on Canvass is a 'Lady in the bath' subject, and approximately 2ft X 1,1/2.

Anybody see this person STUMBLING INN, their home with a painting under their jumper? Or if anyone woke on Monday morning, in bed with a lady in a bath!

A reward is being offered, please contact John, johnspener@live.co.uk

Or simply return it! try not to STUMBLE with it along the way and just put it back INN.

Thank you all in advance

Vicki

Hi Rowlo, I am just the messenger, I have supplied John's email address if you would like to contact him.

Can I just add, John is 70 years old and displays his paintings, in many Taverns in NC.

Thanks for that Spider, no it's not nice that this elder of a gentleman has had his painting taken, however I kept the original post light-hearted as it may well be a prank, albeit a prank too far as it has now been nearly a week since it dissapeared, hopefully someone will now bring it back.

I hope to be able to post a link to a photo of the painting tomorrow.

Vicki

P.S spider, the slanging matches are fine as long as you don't get involved, or drawn in.

Lets hope so Spider, Maybe people don't like to contact someone anonymous and would like to contact me instead? I will willingly give my email address to any one should they have information to get this painting back.

As for the slanging matches Spider, stay away! Like you say just turn the computer off, or stick to the more light hearted threads as I do.

I have had the pleasure of a few chats over a few beers with the artist and his good lady and they are smashing people. He is very passionate about his paintings. Lets hope whoever took the painting has a conscience and remembers where he/she found it.

Morning all thank you for your kind words and yes Dodger lets not stereo-type.

Message 10 Becks, I have sort of hinted in post 1 where it was taken from, I don't want to say outright as I know the landlord of this establishment and don't want to taint his name, as I/we are sure he and his staff had nothing to do with this prank. Can we keep this at the top at least for today? somebody may notice it and remember something.

When i read this thread i thought it was stolen from a pub in England ! If you had said it was nicked from the Kings Arms in London i could have believed it , but from a little place in North Cyprus !! It's the way the world is going, nothing is sacred. I would put my next weeks wages on it being someone English that took it , but, we musn't stereotype must we !!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry! long time no hear from! What you up to?

Simbas thank you, I hope it is returned soon too, some people may wonder what all the fuss is about.

I stayed with John and Linda for three weeks last year (thank you both). It takes John a week or more to complete one of his paintings, plus the cost of the materials are not cheap in N.C.

He is also a pensioner and his hobby is everything to him.

Lets try and get it back today.

Was talking with John about this yesterday and we're hoping it was a prank that has gone a bit too far. Maybe the person is now a bit embarrased by it. Not everyone reads these forums, so while we are all out Sunday lunching etc., if we could mention it around and try to keep it considered a prank then there may be a better prospect of it being returned. Hopefully.

I agree Derick, I to think it's a prank, that's why I have put my email on too, they may be too embarrassed to contact John, If you see John and Linda today please give them my regards, he rang this morning on skype, sounded like a Dalek!

Update: As of this morning the painting has not been returned and no one has come forward.

I think we can now say that this is now stolen, and not as first thought taken as a prank.

Shame.

Thank you everyone who looked for it and asked around about it.

Hi bill, hope you had a nice weekend. The painting in itself is not too valuable except to the Artist, it took two weeks to paint, and as I have said earlier, in N.C the materials are expensive, this is Johns hobby which he takes very seriously.

This 70 year old man is incredibly upset that someone could do this, and thought he was among friends. This is the reason we all thought it was someone having a little fun.

His work is incredibly unique, and he has a great talent, it really is a shame, and a disappointment.

Morning Cruggs, The painting was on display in the local Tavern, (the name is hinted at in message 1, near the Lambousa) where most of his work is displayed and some for sale, only his work is on show, thank you for your sentiments.

And thank you (sort of) for the emails I received yesterday, all though none where about the missing painting! (You know who you are!)

fs...totally agree.

Hope the person who has taken it feels totally ashamed.

Doubt it though. If they had any morals they wouldn't have taken it in the first place.

Just a suggestion......

Reading the message in regards to how expensive the materials are here in NC and I know this will not compensate for all the hard work and effort put into this gentleman's painting....but is there any way board members could donate a couple of lira towards some new materials?

As I said I know this will not compensate for the theft of his painting but it might restore his faith that there are decent people here who are appalled at the low life who stole it in the first place.

Puppylover, That is a really nice idea, I know that John uses an Art shop in Girne, and I believe it is somewhere near Mr Pound (Can't get hold of anyone to confirm this) maybe a donation of materials would come in handy? If (as I suspect) he is a frequent visitor to this shop, they may know what he uses? I don't think 1 tube/carton? Of oil cost's a lot, I believe it's the canvasses and other materials that add up.
