Hi All,

Ive just been looking at the Google Earth site on Cyprus. It appears to have been updated by a matter of weeks. The detail is amazing and you can zoom right in on your property or just sites in Cyprus.

There are also many photos attached to the site of TRNC which are amazing.

Its really worth taking a look!

Hi.

This update was made end of last JUNE 08.

I can vouch for this, as we came over then to look at our plot. I got the developer to mark out the plot whilst we were there. A week later the Villa had been started.

All I can see are the markings for the plot.

Wow, thats fantastic, I've been waiting for that 4 a long time.

We can now see our villa too. Not sure it's 3 weeks ago though, looks longer than that to me, but good to get an update anyway.

Thanks

The 'history' slider now available in google earth 5 is interesting / fun. For my area it only really has 2 different dates but the changes between the two are pretty remarkable !

I think it's got to have been late summer 2008, our pool wasn't filled till about late Aug/Sep but shows as filled. Everywhere looks a bit late summer arid.

Excellent though!

In another 5 yrs can we expect live streaming?

Do we Macha ? Please do tell us then what we all know. I know what the RoC CLAIMS has been and is done with pre 74 TC property in the South post 74 just as I know the real distance between the claims and the reality.

"I know what my eyes show me and what ordinary Cypriots tell me, Erolz. It seems you don't do much travelling about the island."

Once again Macha you show your ability to distort and mislead as part of a consistent agenda of yours. You make out that the GC side has treated TC property in the South in legaly and moraly acceptable way that seeks to 'protect' these properties for the 'true' TC owners where as the TC have simply stolen all they could because they were to lazy and greedy to do otherwise.

The reality is that the way the RoC has actualy treated pre 74 TC property in the South, rather than claims to have treated it, has many many problems to it that you totaly ignore.

However let's not just take my view and what my eyes show me on this issue, for to do that you be egotistical in a way that is your personal specialisation.

From a Greek Cypriot paper quoting extracts from Greek Cypriot laywers and other experts.

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=16240&archive=1

"The whisper in legal circles is that the guardianship law contains more holes than a bloc of Swiss cheese, while any scrutiny of its implementation will open up a can of worms and a host of claims for damages."

"“The case signifies the need to have an in-depth re-evaluation of the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot properties and the issue of maladministration. How is the Guardian looking after the property? Has there been proper administration of that property with the collection of rent? Who is going to pay the bill of Turkish Cypriot properties for the loss of use claims by Turkish Cypriots?”

"“Until 1991, people took whatever they wanted (of TC pre 74 property in the south). It was a disaster, and the best kept secret."

"Markides goes on to explain that the 1991 law on the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot properties is inadequate."

"“For example, in Polemidhia, we had 70 families who had settled, built on and invested in land belonging to Turkish Cypriots. The state acquired the land, and I think they did the right thing in that case."

"“I think that the worst way to deal with this is through court decisions. This whole structure regarding Guardianship will collapse, if not in our courts here then at the ECHR."

"A legal source told the Sunday Mail that the problems with the Guardian law have been known and ignored for some time."

"The property (tc pre 74 in south) has been used by all parties for political favours. Turkish Cypriot property was the secret banquet of politicians and the Cyprus government was treating these properties as their own. But who is going to foot the bill?” asked the source."

So this whole idea that the RoC has 'done the right thing' re pre 74 property in the area unde its control and the TRNC has just stolen all that it could because of greed and lazyiness , is yet another of your repeated and common distoritions.

The property issue is a complex one and neither side is without its problems legal and moral. Of course you would rather have us believe otherwise.

"It seems you don't do much travelling about the island."

What seems apparent you and what reality is , is once again two very different things. I have travelled extensively in both the North and the South. I worked for a time for Bird Life Cyprus in the south for example on a project monitoring illegal bird trapping that required me for 3 months to visit pre mapped 1km squares accross large areas in the South. I can give you the google maps to whole former TC villages that my GC counterpart pointed out to me , where the ROC 'guardian comission'

Has protected the former TC owners property so well that the whole village has been 'rented' out (and at what price ?) to a pig farmer and where the remains of the crunbling former TC houses are now shelter for these animals.

" I get access all areas, remember?"

You get access to no areas that I do not myself have access to. I have access, I use this access and I do not use it with eyes like yours that only see what is convient for them to see. For the record I probably have seen areas you have no access to at all like the Marash. So what are you saying with the above ?

Spider I am a TC citizen. I do get a vote here. I voted on the Annan Plan as a TC and I vote in local and central government elections in the TRNC.

I am sorry if my posts bore you and sound like a stuck record.

However I do feel that when issues are misrepresented I have a right to offer the alternative side to the story. When Macha makes out that pre 74 TC property in the South has not been misaproriated and is treated in a legal way that 'protects' it for the benefit of pre 74 TC owners, I feel I have to correct this one sided and bias and incomplete assement and I have tried to do so here with credible sources that show things are not quite as Macha would have us believe.

Like I say I am sorry if this uspets or frustrates or annoys you, however I can not in all honesty say I will not continue to try and counter such bias and incomplete and one sided posts when I see them. Sorry.

Again I can only appologise. I realise that threads going off topic like this can be annoying and frustrating. However in my defense I would say that I only reacted to a prior post that sought to make a political point in this tread and thus did not 'start it', though I do accept I played my part. It was Macha who took a thread about google earth and politisized it when he said

"And we all know what happens to property left behind in the south compared to the north, don't we?"

With Juliet jumping in straigt after. It is THIS post that had nothing to do with google earth or the thread topic but was a blatant 'political point scoring' exercise that I felt obliged to respond to. Without it I can assure you that I would either have not posted in this thread or only posted on topic comments.

"In another 5 yrs can we expect live streaming?"

Rob (or Jo?) I think this is a fascinating question. Certainly the 'end point' of google earth would be for live or near live views of anywhere on the earth available to anyone with internet access. I do not think it will happen in 5 years but I do think it will happen eventualy and I think the ramifications of such will be massive. I think changing the way that people can 'view' the world in such a fundamental way would have to change the way people relate to that world. A global ability for anyone to view anywhere on the earth would change so many things from media and how it shapes our view of the world to jurispridence and much much more. Facsinating and I hope I get to see it.

I wrote Google a little while back, commenting on the fact that the picture of the area around Karsiyaka was from 2003. And lo and behold, now I can zoom in on my house where there was only a field some time ago. This picture is from 2008. Great. Feel more at home right away.

It appears to be very recent of Karsiyaka as the new Kofali houses boyond the back of the school are on there, so much later than July 08 IMHO

Pipie there is a way to see the date of an image in google earth 5.0

From the view menu option turn on historical imagery. Then in the bottom left of the main screen it should show an Imagery date. For where my house and zoomed right in Girne this shows Apr 23, 2008 as the latest image.

Hope that helps.

Tiggy you should download the lates version of the google earth software which you can do here

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

However how up to date a given image is varies quite widely from area to area. It is all to do with the price companies charge google for these images. Generally the more 'populous' an area then the more the owners od said image charge google as well as charging for more up to date images. So typically areas like London tend to have older images than North Cyprus, because those people who have up to date images of London have a bigger market for them and can sell them at a higher price, so google takes an older image at a lower price.

Resolution should be at least as good as previous. If you are printing, do not print at 'screen resolution', choose 'medium' (still free).

You can get higher resolution if you subscribe to 'Pro/Premium' services from google.
