Hi Navek my own opinon is that its much cheaper to buy drinks from supermarkets. My friend who owns pubs in UK said he has to close 3 because its cheaper to buy and drink at home than he gets from the Brewery. That coupled with the smoking ban makes for a night at home.I worry that the smoking ban here will have the same effect. We had 4 smoking police in last week with posters. I asked why when it does not come in until 2010. Answer we need a practice run. Fine 120th for smoker 1200tl for owner before January 2010. I just wonder how many turkish restaurants bars etc they target. As they left they all lit up.

Hi nevek, I have a pub in england we do 60% wet 40%food the smoking ban has affected the trade in our case not by much but from a social side the bar was full of people all chatting, some smoking some not now all of a sudden there is a mass exidos out to the smoking area even the none smokers go out with them, people who come in the rear of the pub are thinking its quite yet there is 25 people outside the social part of the pub has become the smoking area for many, on a personal note i am a none smoker but i dont see what right have i got to tell someone else your a social outcast go outside,in our pub before the ban there was areas for smokers and none smokers if i was in the none smoking area then i was with none smokers if i wanted to speak to the smokers it was my choice to go into the smoking area only my opinion, ray.

hi gordon, in answer to your question no as nobody was smoking, but i believe the ravine got a fine a few weeks before. Have they been to you. They droped posters to us and Pizzzaking. No I am asking all smokers to go outside as I got the impression that if they see anyone smoking they will have an instant fine.Said they have to pracice before new year.

I have no sympathy for pubs that are now falling on hard times. As a non drinker I have always been the nominated driver, so its soft drinks for me. The thing that really used to pee me off was that most pubs would charge more for a pint of coke than a pint of bitter. They used to coin it in, but not anymore, Along with other issues like the smoking ban, trade is being hit, and hit hard. So people are now cutting right back by getting their booze (and coke) from Tescos Michael

i own my own pub/restaurant and we went no smoking one tear befor the ban our trade was not effected. the reason i think was because of the quality of our food. we have a seperate area for smokers. i think most pubs are going under because of the goverment duty rises each year and the breweries increasing prices on a yearly basis also they need to stop supermarkets selling beer as a loss leader. i am lucky because i own my own place but managed and lease pubs are hit with big rents and expensive drinks from the breweries they are tied to i feel sorry for them but most freehold free of tie pubs will survive. one thought being a non smoker eating your meal how many have been outraged when a smoker on the next table has just lit up without a thought for anyone but them. you smokers with small children smoking in there presence what say have they got

Whilst I can't comment of UK pub closures there was a long trend of many pubs closing in Australia before smoking bans due to changes in demographics and pub culture only arrested in some states by the introduction of poker machines and gambling revenue. I read that New York appeared to suffer no loss in patronage after banning smoking as well as more non smokers starting going out more often and smokers had no choice unless they wanted to stay home. In Australia smokers represent an ever diminishing proportion of the population (less than 30%) and I would have thought a similar trend would be in place in the U.K.. A lot on non smokers limited there visits to places that allowed smoking as much due to the smell as any potential health effects. The TRNC would appear to have a much higher percentage of smokers and generally smaller bars etc. which makes it harder here. Personally I was more than happy if properly separate smoking and non smoking areas are in place. Auss

dont forget the "drink drive" aspect !! so many of us depend on our licenses for our livelyhood that must effect pubs dramatically !!

The pub trade is thriving in the UK since the smoking ban with pubs bulging at the seams with the very people who have been campaigning for years for no smoking. NOT.

Why should pub/bar staff have to work in a smoke filled environment and risk the associated health risks? No one smokes at work (indoors) these days. Would any of us want to work somewhere where we were told that there was a high risk of catching a terminal illness? I think not.

But on the flip side Hector, bar staff weren't forced to take their jobs and knew they would be working in a smoking environment.

Having run a pub for 6 years in the 1980's I can tell you that a big reason that pubs get into trouble is greedy breweries and pub companies charging extortionate prices and rents. Then there is the business rate and council tax. In the last year of our tenancy our rent increased 3fold and business rates more than doubled.

I go out twice a week, once for ameal with my wife and on Saturday afternoon with three of my mates. The pub we visit for a meal is normally bursting at the seams with diners 7days a week.Good food proper beer prices and reasonable wine prices, hence good trade. The other pub on Saturday if Stoke are playing at home is full of fans and he does a roaring trade, otherwise maybe 20/30 people in the bar, mostly smokers ,but he invested in a proper outdoor smoking area,so they are allhappy. The one thing he has said is the continuing increases by the breweries for their products.A pint went up 15p last weekend..people wont stand that for much longer..

When I was in the pub trade, a couple of weeks before Budget day the breweries would beg the chancellor not to increase alcohol duties, then they would go and slap their own price rises on!
