Being new to the island, I was wondering how you do it when it comes to ones mail.

I mailed off a package containing 19 kg of books, wanting some in our new home. The limit, incidentally, is 20 kg and this one cost me approx £80,- to mail.

Since I can track such a package with the help of my trusty computer, I resorted to that after not seing the package for a long time.

I mailed the package on Jan 12th 2009 from our home in Norway, it passed through the main postoffice in Oslo on the 13th, was sent on the same day and arrived in Turkey on the 20th, once again sent on and arrived in Cyprus on the 26th. But where, oh where? I live in Karsiyaka, but in the postoffice there (the COOP in the village) it has not been seen, nor in the main postoffice in Girne. A friend suggested Lapta postoffice, but of course they sent me back to Karsiyaka.

If this is going to be the par for the course, I will not dare to mail anything to myself, nor can I ask others to mail me.

Any suggestions?

mail is a nightmare here. several parcels of mine have got lost and not delivered to me from the uk. if you got any friends over the south who will let you use their po box, it is much better that way. so far, every parcel sent to the south from the uk has turned up. there is an investigation going on to find out why the mail is getting lost and not getting delivered to the north. so basically, i would not get anymore parcels sent to you, its too risky.

thanks, I'll try the customs. By the way, where do I find those? At the airport, maybe?

i would think lefkosa?

i usually get my post of books and c.d 's from amazon no problem.

it may be that customs have it as it was a larger than usual parcel for normal mail.

or try the post office in lefkosa, maybe they could help?

I was told that there was a long waiting list for a po box. Is that true for Karsiyaka as well? And if so, could I getone at the main postoffice in Girne? What would it take?

Yes, anything over a certain size goes to customs in Girne. I always get a note in my P.O. Box to go and collect parcel from Girne, and you have to open it in front of them and they then decide if you have duty to pay. Customs at Girne is underneath the post office and open 9.00 - 11.30.

Your parcel would arrive first in Lefkosa, better you go and see the post master there with evidence of your tracking. We have not had any private mail for years from Uk, except the odd cards at xmas which incidentally were not stamped in Lefkosa this time. In the past, mail has been offloaded in Istanbul, and continued it's journey overland during the festive season. Then driven off the ferry and straight to Girne, hence no Lefkosa stamp, only the Girne one on the back. I think the problem lies in the main branch of the Post Office.

I've heard many horror stories about mail in the TRNC....either taking an age to arrive,or not arriving at all.

Just a thought...would it be practical to have a PO Box in Nicosia?.....would this even be allowed ie would you need a permanent address/citizenship in the South?

You could then arrange a trip over Ledra Street every so often to collect mail.
