Hi, We are thinking on moving over permanently but are unsure of the education system. We have 2 kids age 13 & 9. Can anyone advise us on the reputation and standard of the schools? qualification equivelants etc?

Would need to be private obviously with the language barrier. Also, how would the qualifications gained affect moving on to universities in the U.K? (my daughters intended career strictly needs specific qualifications to gain entry here)

Any advise would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Thanks for the replies,

I have been in touch with Sunny Lane, but unfortunately they dont cater for chemistry exams yet and my daughter needs this at higher level to pursue her career choice. Any other suggestions?

Hi Simbas, She is thirteen - 2nd year over here.

Not set on any particular area yet, have looked all over and to be honest I would'nt rule out any area that we saw on our visits.

Want to sort out schooling as first priority and take it from there.

regards, Mary

One of the secretaries at our lawyers' office in Kyrenia used to drive to Nicosia to take her son to school as she didnt feel Sunny Lane was on the same level as schools in the UK. They are quite behind on stuff there.

That would be great Helen, thanks.

Having trouble accessing GAU website at the moment, so have not been able to contact them as yet, but we know Sunny Lane wont be suitable for us.

Good luck on your trip, hope it all goes well.

Am I right in presuming the school in Nicosia would be GAU?

Hi Mary

No problem the GAU school I am looking at is in Kyrenia - not sure if there is one in Nicosia too.

Still trying to get hold of GAU to make an appointment - and yes their website is hard to find! I think I have a link for it somewhere - will forward it to you if I can find it.

Hi karamany - with the age of your children, both being in secondary from september, think you will probably be better off trying GAU - or indeed as peachy has said one of the state schools - I believe TMK is Türk Maarif, there is also one in Girne. The only reason for saying this is that Sunny Lane are still in their infancy as far as the secondary school is concerned as they are getting more children of that age group coming up through the primary.

I have to disagree with peachy as regards Sunny Lane's teaching being rubbish though - this from first hand experience with their primary school.

Hi everyone.

We moved here in sept 07 and put our daughter in Sunnylane. What a big mistake. Expensive and the eductaion was absolutley rubbish. She hardly learnt anything while she was there, so we removed her and taught her from home until we worked out what to do next. She now goes to Catalkoy school. She loves it there and the quality of work is good.

Sunnylane are only interested in making as much money as possible and do not care at all.

My advice is stay away or you might as well throw you money and your childs education down the drain.

Hi AndyP

Sorry you and your daughter had a bad experience at Sunny Lane.

I can only comment on my own experience and it has been good, my kids have both done really well there - for which I am thankful, but have to agree with you about the money mentality. I know a lot of people are happy there, and some have been there since it opened - but also that a lot of people havent got on there.

Thankfully you have achieved a happy outcome.

Surprised to hear that Sunny Lane didn't offer Chemistry at a higher level as our daughter has been studying it there for a year at IGCSE level and will sit the exam next year. Personally, I think the secondary science and maths departments at SL are very good.

ian,

I see you're from Scotland. I think it would be hard to find a place offering our Highers unless you mean something along the lines of the English system of GCE A levels. From my experience of people with kids they either sent them to the south side (as many TCs and Brit consular staff do) or taught them at home. I know a couple who went back home because the school exams were more important then a holiday home. Horses for courses as long as the kids come first, I suppose.

Hi SL is planning to expand to a 6th form college to offer A levels/AS levels within a year so it is still expanding. I have two children at SL one in primary amd one in secondary they are happy enough there. One has flourished. The best way forward is to look at all the schools to see which one suits you get a feel when you visit not every school is the best option for every child. Some children travel to Highgate school (think thats what its called) in the south but then you need to weigh up the pros and cons as most of the students there are from the south so you risk their isolation to some extent.

All I can say about the education system in North Cyprus is a colleague of mine brought his wife and four children to england for their education. They have now finished their studies and have gone back to live and work in North Cyprus. He is a teacher by the way
