According to wikipedia

"Information warfare is the use and management of information in pursuit of a competitive advantage over an opponent. Information warfare may involve collection of tactical information, assurance(s) that one's own information is valid, spreading of propaganda or disinformation to demoralize the enemy and the public, undermining the quality of opposing force information and denial of information-collection opportunities to opposing forces."

Related topics include Disinformation and Black propaganda.

I note with interest that one of our more outspoken posters here (and elsewhere) with a background in journalism lists 'information warfare' as one of their 'areas of speciality' in their public linkedin profile. They also state on the same public profile they are "Available for contract or consultancy work." and are interested in, career opportunities, consulting offers, new ventures, job inquiries, expertise requests.

Some more wikipedia articles that connect to the 'information warfare' one

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

"Propaganda is the dissemination of information aimed at influencing the opinions or behaviors of large numbers of people. As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda."

which leads techiques to of propaganda which include

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-truth

"A half-truth comes in several forms, and is a deceptive statement, that includes some element of truth. The statement might be partly true, the statement may be totally true but only part of the whole truth, or it may utilize some deceptive element, such as improper punctuation, or double meaning, especially if the intent is to deceive, evade, blame or misrepresent the truth"

Other techiques include

"Ad hominem

A Latin phrase which has come to mean attacking your opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments.

Ad nauseam

This argument approach uses tireless repetition of an idea. An idea, especially a simple slogan, that is repeated enough times, may begin to be taken as the truth. This approach works best when media sources are limited and controlled by the propagator.

Oversimplification

Favorable generalities are used to provide simple answers to complex social, political, economic, or military problems

and

Red herring

Presenting data or issues that, while compelling, are irrelevant to the argument at hand, and then claiming that it validates the argument.

Scapegoating

Assigning blame to an individual or group, thus alleviating feelings of guilt from responsible parties and/or distracting attention from the need to fix the problem for which blame is being assigned.
