Does anyone remember the "Soup Kitchen" behind the old Bus Station Girne.?

It used to be the only place open at 4 o clock in the morning. I recall the grey "soup" that I thought was mushroom but turned out to be some Sheep,s stomach concoction. Always felt sober after I left there!!

Remember it well, my daughter used to work at Dome Casino during 1988/9 and when they all finished work would go there for the soup at 6 a.m. then bring fresh bread in, it used to be packed. The Soup Kitchen was the road on the right from the Dome Hotel to the High Street then first left. It is now a car park.

We remember Kings Court in the early 1990's when Ali & Enver, Liz's sons were running the bar & every night after they finished they would head for the soup kitchen. We never went there ourselves.

We frequented ; Rose Garden Ozankoy mid 80 s and remember having the best Oven cooked Chicken Meal EVER. We asked Hussein for a meal reservation in the afternoon. He pointed to the pen at the rear and said; Which one? I asked for the big white chicken and by evening it was on the plate. The Wife said she saw a tear in the chicken's eye when I chose it !!

I remember the rubber tyre roundabouts well! I also remember seeing, in Lefkosa, a man driving a car which had no driver's door. No-one turned a hair!

1984 Lapta strip consisted of Celebrity Hotel, Marmaris restaraunt and Ali Pashas,(now Jessics). Elifs market was a shack .Denizkizi Hotel and Dome the other options to stay (apart from Famagusta). Karsiyaka a small sleepy village.

Dolmas from Lapta to Girne would normally go through upper Lapta and upper Alsancak as there was not many fares to be had on the (now) main road.

Oscars the only car hire firm of note.Seargent Mustafa ran the only money "shop".

Memories!

Anybody remember the "HIRONDELLE" Casino Club on the Main Lefkosa road into Girne?

Opposite the Aqua Park past Karakum there was a small Church on the Coast. Over some volcanic rock there was a little sandy Bay where I used to "skinny dip" until I found 3 snakes taking a fancy to my clothing

I remember when the Mosaics were unearthed at Soli. Went to "Dan Camp" next door where the Danish UN Contingent had filled their "Pool" with cans and bottles of BEER. Both looked very impressive

Did anyone do the early Ferry Trips to Tasascu/Silifke. I remember the Captain on one Trip was "otherwise engaged". When he finally realised we were heading to Syria, he swung the "wheel" round with such force the damn Ferry nearly keeled over.

The other direction was even sparser. Courtyard Inn and then Ozankoy was the hub of life. Lovely Fish Restaurant on approach to Catalkoy and then the wonderful Acapulco beach.

I forget his name, but does anyone remember the restaurent as you went into the Harbour opposite the old custom house right on the corner. If you had the full kebab he banged a gong everytime a course came up. He had a stroke and gave it up it is now a bar.

Hi P&J

'We remember Kings Court in the early 1990's when Ali & Enver, Liz's sons were running the bar & every night after they finished they would head for the soup kitchen. We never went there ourselves.'

Kings Court was always our choice of accommodation when we were visiting the TRNC and we have became good friends with Ali and his mother Liz. Ali is now in the UK (dodging military service) and there have been some changes to the hotel. Most of the bottom level (at the front) has been turned into a kindergarten. Oh happy days.

AJ

The first two years that we came to the TRNC we stayed at The Esprit, but would always use the bar at Kings Court. We had a couple of years gap & when we went back we started staying at Kings Court. We have also become friendly with Liz, Ali & Turhan. Ali used to take our son water sking & they would sit for hours talking about cars & engines. Whenever we are over we always pop in to say hi. As you say happy days.

Snap! Although we also used the Mermaid Hotel (Denizkizi). The gorgeous pouting Mrs Macha was used to model around the swimming pool in a tourism video and brochure once. That was back in the days when there were a good view tourists at the Esprit. I don't know how the old chap manages these days.

Hello

The Pottery is still there - Dizayn 74. It was the only building on that road when I first started going there. Every Chirstmas I had plates made to designs I supplied, and gave them to close friends as presents. Just looked at one now -1987; I think I started it in 1984. Alan Cavindar used to have a full set of them in his bar - wherever it was at the time. Remember his attitude to running a bar? 'Every day I throw a party, and someone else pays!' Such happy memories....

First came here in 1996 and stayed in a big villa in Catalkoy which is now Patina Restaurant! There was only one set of traffic lights (Bellapais lights) and we were advised by the hire car man "when the light is red, sometimes you stop and sometimes you go" with a shrug of his shoulders. The harbour was pretty much the same except there were only a few tables on the quayside with small umbrellas.

Hi Mark

You're right, Mo was with Allan (just found correct spelling). I know Allan sadly died a couple of years back, but where is Jean?

Allan's Bar was the only source of information, I recall. It was there or the BBC World Service. And of course Pan magazine (Editor Arman Ratip) and Allan was a regular contributor.

All the cars were left hand drive and it made overtaking so much more fun.

Power cuts were a way of life.

There was not a single supermarket.

Would you turn back the clock if you could?

Macha I'm sure Mrs Wick was not ignoring your post about the Esprit. I think we stayed there the first year it opened & then the next year.

A coincidence that first year was when we visited the Hideaway, I was sure I knew one of the brothers, then it clicked 16 years earlier we had both worked for the same branch of Nat West. Small world.

Geraldine and Werner in partnership with Barbara and Husband? took over the old Karakum Motel ( now Courtyard).

Are they still there?

Pan - now that was a load of old rubbish and I hope it came to a natural end. Thinking it was a serious magazine, first time I read it early 90s my jaw dropped lower as I worked my way through it. Not only was it a vehicle for the latest dodgy projects by local big fish crooks like Del Monte Man (guess who I'm talking about, duty secret policeman - I know you're out there) and an ego massager for the Denktator, it was full of some of the most poisonous ultra-nationalistic, anti-Cypriot cobblers you could ever believe.

Cavinder was a larger than life character and typical Yorkshireman. We had a spat going through the letters pages of Cyprus Today at one point.

Writing and reading posts on this threads really brings home how north Cyprus has changed over the last couple of decades. Recent arrivals would barely recognise some areas.

That is progress Macha, nothing stays the same where ever you may live.It is nice to reflect sometimes especially for those people who may now be alone and who have some fond memories.

I suppose in the old days we made do with fewer things and as such, conversation in watering holes such as Allan's Bar, was by in large ,the highlight of our existence.

Hi Mark

I'm trying to recall Eddie, but can't. Barbara etc at the Courtyard, yes. Reading your profile to see if we know each other, I see you remember Sgt Osman. Now there was a character! Remember he 'sold his sister to the Arabs'? Do we know each other? My Father was Gerry Byrne (little Irishman, big tenor voice)

trncoldboy, re mess 37. Geraldine & Werner went on to start Rafters, he plies his trade these days as a muscian, he has some kind of steam powered musical machine, never seen it but it certainly sounds as though it may be different to most of the musical acts. As for Barbara & (I apologise if I have his name wrong) Jeff, the last I heard they were running a holiday complex that is situated on the main Girne, Lefkosa road, as you come over the mountains from Lefkosa & start the descent it is on your left (sorry I can't remember the name)

Hi the Wicks.

The only holiday village I know coming into girne is Onur Village. Couple of years ago I heard it was tied up with Chimera. I know that the manager at that time was also the manager at Chimera, Fem a mainland Turk he was also many years ago the Manager of Riverside and the Pitoresk.

Chick mess 44-That's the name I could not remember, yes it was the Onar village.

Mark & Maggie mess 47- Barbara & Jeff did seem to have the Midas touch, I think I'm right in saying that they built up the Onar Village & then sold it on, there is also an Italian restaurant on the site that they were running, not sure what they are up to now.

Hi Mark

Yes, you have the right Gerry & Golia. So maybe we do know each other? By Allan Cavindar's reckoning at some point in the '80's, there were only 300 British Residents in the whole of the North of Cyprus. !00 of those had gone completely native and lived in Turkish villages in the mountains, a further 100 were T total, leaving a mere 100 with the responsibility of keeping all the bars in business - people don't realise how hard we had to work at it!

Did Sgt. Osman ever get the copy of Besema Mucho he was always asking for?

I am sure we must know each other by sight. We remember your father as AlWAYS happy and smiling even when he was very poorly in his latter years.

We stayed at your Father's property in Ozankoy and we may still have some photos.

Your point about Expats is very valid. Businesses really struggled. I personally think I should have got the "Boozers Medal" 1st class for my efforts!!!

Sgt Osman, what can I say, A legend . Despite having severe Diabetes , his Love of Life and stamina were incredible. We should all take a leaf out of his book.

We are due to come for a short visit end of this Month. Maybe we could have a drink together?

Mark

One Sunday afternoon Dad & Golia, myself and my late husband Bill, and a Turkish Couple + their young daughter went somewhere I only knew as 'the Soldiers' Place'. Somewhere out towards Karsiyaka I think. Six adults, lots of serious drinking, non-stop food for six hours. Cost? £9.

I'm in England and hoped to be back by the end of the month but it's not looking good yet. Would love to meet up though sometime soon.

You remember Hassan, the 'Teacher of English?'....

Jolly good cheers!

Jo msg 53 I remember the soldiers place well. One large building by the seaside. Huge car parking area and we sat on the verandah in the shade and were served by "Trainee" Army waiters. They made particularly good KOFTE AND chips. Prices were the same as charged to the Army Personel.

Was told that a few years back somebody , maybe Gina Lolabridgida, shot part of a Film at that Location. That place was quite something!!!

Can't place that particular Hassan at the moment The only Teacher we knew offered to sell us the Land and foundation which turned out to be "Shirley Valentines" in the end.

We called it the Army Beach, it had a private jetty for the top brass. You got to it down the side of Green Garage. If you wanted anything went to the Mess and the soldiers brought it down for you, naffi prices.

Anyone remember 'Rita on the Rocks', The lovely Rita in the flowing Khaftan would 'Pressgang' UN Officers and Soldiers to go and spend the day at her Poolside Restaurant. Sometimes grabbing them at the Ledra Palace Hotel. What a ' Larger than Life ' Lady she was! Happy Days

Remember Rita's place very well. Wife used lounge in her small swimming pool when she was pregnant with our Son.

Took my Father there once and as he was lounging on the Rocks he was stung on the arm by a Hornet. Arm came up the size of his leg. Got treated straight away at Girne Hospital no problem except he couldn't drink alcohol for the rest of his stay.

PS Lovely Lady and her food was good also

Hi Happy Hussar - yes, we remember the lovely Rita of the Rocks very well. A lovely lady and her husband a smashing bloke. She does post on here occasionally - not for general chit-chat, but if she has something she wants to bring to someone's attention. Haven't seen her to speak to for a while. Don't know how 'larger than life' she was the last time you saw her, but she is still larger than life with her wonderful personality but not physically (if you know what I mean). Rita, if you read this, it is meant as a compliment. We had some great times down at "The Rocks" and also some good evenings when she took over the "Bamboo" restaurant opposite Kings Court. I think Rita could teach a lot of restauranteurs in NC a thing or two about running a successful business. Lovely couple.

Kind regards

msg 61 Couldn't agree more. Rita had the knack of adjusting to the clientele at the time . A real People's person and always helpful.

Happy Hussar and Mark

Coincidentally, I see Rita has posted on the "International Women's Day" thread today. How's that for timing?

Slightly off track, IE not TRNC, Does anyone remember 'ELLENS BAR' that was on the Naughty Street in Nicosia? Ellen with the one inch nipples with tassels on that she could swing in different directions at the same time!

I remember one night when the bar was full of soldiers she performed her speciality the 'Austrian Salute'. What a woman, and No, I wont elaborate!

trnc coldboy -

Exchange rate in 1983 was about 300tl to £1.

First time I went in 1981 it was 215tl/£1

Jo Valentine -

Jean Kavinder left Cyprus to live somewhere on the south coast of England, and sadly died from some form of cancer, I cannot remember exactly when but I think she died before Allan.

The Bars and Discos in Girne in the 80s were a sorry state. There were virtualy no women and men used to dance with men just to have some fun.

I remember the "Champagne" Bar in the old part of town was popular for a while.

Anybody remember the Yugoslav plane that crashed by the 5 finger mountain?

It just failed to clear one of the fingers and it was a good job it wasn't carrying passengers at the time.

It was 28th February 1988. 15 killed. 727 belonging to a Turkish charter company, think it was leased from JAT.

I was in UK at the time but my mum lived in Karaoglanoglu. She told me the accident put Kyrenia in a bit of a spin as the emergency services were pretty basic back then.

I copied this from Wikipedia

On January 29, 1973, the 1973 EgyptAir Ilyushin IL-18 (Reg No SU-AOV) crashed into the Pentadaktylos mountain range on approach to Nicosia International Airport (Cyprus), killing all 37 aboard (7 crew and 30 passengers).

Air Sinai was formed in the 1980's so an Egyptian plane could fly cargo to Israel

There used to be a cinema next to the Kibtek building but I have never known it open (since 1981)

I remember seeing an open air cinema as well but cannot remember where it was

There was a New Cinema next to the Lemar and near the Pegasus. There were steps down below car park level? Year 2001?

Mark - good grief, was it really 2001? I know time flies when you're getting old (you and I are the same age, by the way) but 8 years ago!! If anyone had asked me when the Lemar cinema opened, I'd have had a stab at around 2004/5. Mind you, the memory's not what it was!

J; I only remembered because it was the last time we visited TRNC. I did enjoy the experience, namely air conditioning, 38c outside, very cheap and just us and 1 other customer.

Hey Jean, it's Threads like this one that excercise the mind, I hope!

I was very young when I was posted to Cyprus and was "set up" as it turned out by some of the old hands at RAF Henlow who suggested if I ever went to Nic I should visit Ellens bar and ask to see "black mac". I won't go into details as ladies may be reading this. Suffice to say it was slightly shocking but had all my mates laughing for days afterwards - at my expense.

Can anyone recall the name of the Restaurant on the Coast opposite Karsyaka which had a Bulls Head on the wall by the Bar?
