Should the Ten Commandments be displayed in Schools?

Surely Schools need to teach students morality for the modern world, and is there no better source of moral values than the Ten Commandments?

I concur Bill. I think these are basic moral principles that transcend culture and "religion" etc.

Good point.

good point from both of you. If only they could teach the ten commandments but the mixed races in schools now would be up in arms.

I don't think it's too late to start doing this. Why should'nt schools be allowed to put a sign up displaying the Ten Commandments. You don't have to read it if you don't want to. On the other hand it might just make some kids take notice an perhaps instill a bit of morality in some of them.

I don't disagree Bill but perhaps parents should also try to teach their kids right from wrong, surely education in morality ought to begin at home.

Hi ... No1D, Lilli, Hattikins and Kitty...

You might be interested to see how this knits in with No1's thread on Faith Schools ... I have taken up the gauntlet on both questions in a general answer and it may well develope into a good debate.

As you can probably guess I am not one for "what if" , "maybe" , "if only" and "ah well" when it comes to what I think is at the base of a lot of our current woes and , as such, is far too important to dismiss.

Regards Joseph

A reminder:

You shall have no other Gods but me.

You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.

Respect your father and mother.

You must not kill.

You must not commit adultery.

You must not steal.

You must not give false evidence against your neighbour.

You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour.

The first 4 are obviously 'religion' specific.

The remaining 6 are more 'morality' oriented.

Perhaps only the last 6 could be displayed in all schools without causing Religious dissent or confusion?

With regard to keeping the Sabbath Holy

The working pattern for many people now is five days out of seven often involving working Saturday and Sunday, I know it is necessary in some professions but when does this allow for a family day, when you can eat together, play together, or just spend time together. I do feel that this has had an adverse effect on society.

How many on here have broken one of the Commandments. OK I'll admit it, I broke one. I'm envious of my neighbours car - well it is a Bentley Continental. )
