I know. cyprus44 article on Sourpmagar Monastery is actually rankings no. 5 in that search engine results page.

Did anyone drive there? How do you go? It's supposed to be somewhere near Alevkayasi. I think I've been to that monastery but I am not sure. I can't seem to find any good photos of it too :-/

Nige - so you use Dogpile not Google or Yahoo?

There is a monastery between lapta and Karsiyaka, hidden up in the hills, you can see it from certain spots when you look down from the tank road. Not sure what the palce is called but it looks like it could be the place, to get there, I heard you have to park and then hike up quite a ways, thats one of the reasons its not very well known.

Good to see if anyone has managed to get pics of it.

Never been myself, I must admit, but my trusty Bradt guide, which rarely lets my visiting friends down with duff information, gives the following directions from Buffavento. "All you have to do to visit Sourp Magar is cross the tarmac road at the brow of the hill and continue eastwards along the crest of the range … The turn-off to the monastery can easily be missed, hidden as it is amongst the trees of a picnic site. Should you arrive at a T junction, nearby to the Alevkaya Forest station, you have gone about 100m too far." Apparently, the signs at Alevkaya were smashed in a traffic accident and may not have been replaced. Let us know when you find it!

Hi,

Sourpmagar is indeed on the way to the Herbarium (Alevkaya). If you go from the mountain route from Girne to Buffavento, there is a Restaurant on the main road on the left and you turn up the side and over the mountain. It is a fantastic drive which takes you right past - and up close - to the five finger mountain, and by the way the restaurant which has just been extended is very good too.

Just before you get to the Herbarium there is a picnic area, but you can look down to the monastery before you get there - if you can bear to look over the sheer drop that is! It is now well signposted and you can drive down to it from the picnic area - but I think I would really only attempt it in a four wheel drive otherwise you might lose your exhaust.

In my view well worth a visit, there is a small cafe there now. It is an interesting building - although crumbling a bit so you do have to be careful, but good to go an have a wander.

If you decide to stop at the Restaurant for drinkies or a meal where you turn left to go onto the mountain road to the Monastary, please check/ask for prices before ordering, there are none on the Menu. We obviously had MUG written on our foreheads last Summer, as we had 3 Beers and they decided to charge us 5YTL for each one!!!! Eventually, after a lot of hassle we paid 3YTL each, shame because it's a nice place and food looks good, but we won't be visiting again.

I can echo what Guvenen says. We had lunch there last year and the price charged for the food and a couple of beers was way over the top. Our own fault as we didn't ask, but the food was nice. Won't go there again though

we found the monastry when we there in May, we went to Esentepe and drove 'up and over' and found it by accident! We only had a Nissan Sunny and my husband refused to get out of the car in case it wouldn't start again! Apparently, you can stay there overnight, buyt that would be pretty freaky! And yes, we also had lunch without checking the prices - have got so used to not being ripped off in TRNC we had become complacent so were disappointed to be charged a lot more than we had anticipated!
