msg 1,

You are spot on. They were from the 60s mainly and before my time, but were re-run in the 1980s on BBC2 (I think). First class stuff and a lot of it used in schools/colleges.

The Wicks, I know it wasn't a feature Film but have you seen; A RATHER ENGLISH MARRIAGE with Albert Finney and Tom Courtney. About a widowed Squadron Leader who begins to rely on his lackey. In a strange way this reminded me of the times at The Melting Pot .

Message 14 - trncoldboy - I have indeed seen this and I have also read the book. I thought it was a very good film/book and I've always thought Albert Finney was a great actor. Melting Pot days a bit before my time, unfortunately.

I found Jo's statistics from the "olden days" very interesting.

Hi TRNC,

Excellent drama a rather English Marriage. I remember it caused quite an outcry because it was the first and only time Joanna Lumley appeared nude on film and poor old Reggie (Albert Finney) had a stroke/heart attack...

in the play not in real life I hasten to add

Must give a mention to some of the old tv films/plays ... my favourites...

George Formby and Old Mother Riley

Do you remember them?

I used to love watching Harold Lloyd. VERY early films but they still had me laughing my head off every Saturday. Another great actor I don't think has been mentioned yet - George Formby. Who can resist smiling watching his expressions?

Great Stuff.

I was in our local newsagents last year and he had a huge box full of the old Laurel and Hardy films on dvd, all brand new for 99p each.

Twenty different films of their classic humour.

I couldn't resist and bought one of each.

Another fine mess...

Great bargain Joseph! Don't think I could have resisted that either.

On the subject of comedy again; another brilliant comedy actor I loved is Bob Hope. The road films, paleface and son of pale face, the seven little foys - all classics.

Hi TRNC,

Just got in real late... but for your morning coffee...

What a result, did you get the game. I nil down half time and go on to win 2-1 with goals from Fellaini and Saha. Middlesborough put up one hell of a fight.

Great game, great result

Re movie asked about filmed in Cyprus... you are right .... it was called: McGuire Go Home.

Have copy pasted the review below for you.

"Something of a romantic potboiler but strongly redeemed by two factors which stamp it as a thoroughly British rather than a Hollywood production. First, the gritty realism of its portrayal of the Cypriot independence struggle against British military rule in the 1950s. Second, its warts-and-all portrayal of everyday relationships and behaviour, instead of the typical Hollywood sanitized morality of the era."

Is that topical or what and this film was shot in 1964 I think.

All about the land, ownership and self determination, as I say topical?

Regards Joseph.

Hi Joseph, Yes I do remember it now. The Film was not a popular one on it's release and has remained on the dusty shelves since. But , as you say, still highly topical today.

Norman Wisdom is still alive, although not in good health. His family made the decision to sell his beautiful home on the Isle of Man late last year, as he was not well enough to return home after a spell in hospital.

Hi Simbas,

The Egyptian was based on the book of the same name by Mika Waltari.

I recall collecting his novels when young, if you can get a copy you will not be disappointed, the Egyptian ( The Etruscan, The Roman etc) are superb.

A great read for your hols in TRNC

Regards Joseph
