Let's have a quick discussion on which categories there should be on Cyprus44.

I don't want to have too many categories like on some boards, where discussions are very isolated and nobody posts on some specific categories for a few days.

On NCF, I had this 4 categories but I don't think they are the best 4 categories to divide this forum.

1. General Chat

2. Property Related

3. Tourism

4. Politics

- things connected to internet (lots of dicussion on this)

- shippimng companies and recommendations

- Routes to different places (lots of discussion on this)

Just some suggestions and thans for your hard workd - appreciated by us all. Thank you again.

Hi Izzet, also include in SERVICES section per above - restaurants, take away, garden centres. This would then group a really useful lot of info in one category - re: what moira was suggesting also - shipping companies and add hire car and taxi contact details

great work - thx

OK, here's my suggestions!

Like Izzet, I don't like too many choices, and some forums have far too many categories so posts get 'lost'. My suggestion is to have just four categories, and make it clear what type of post goes in each.

1) General Chat: talk to forum members, advertise your forthcoming event, etc

2) Living in North Cyprus: everything for the permanent resident, incl. utilities, good stores, import/export, pool cleaners, you name it!

3) Visiting North Cyprus: everything for the visitor, incl. restaurant recommendations, hotel reviews, flights, driving directions..

4) North Cyprus Property: incl. new developments, issues with vendors, best places to buy, discussion on title deeds

Now comes the groovy bit - not sure if this is technically possible, but hey! When you start a thread, you can click a tick box showing what that post is about, a bit like sticking tags on a blog post. You only get the choices that are appropriate for that category, of course. So, within Living in North Cyprus, if you are talking about finding a good solicitor, for example, you could click a box that adds the tag 'solicitor' to your post. (Yes, I know it would probably be in the title, but bear with me.) All replies to that post also have the 'solicitor' tag added automatically.

A special forum search box is placed at the top of the forum page, which *only* searches these forum tags. Then, when members wants to search the forum, they only find forum posts with the tag 'solicitor', not everything on the Cyprus44 site that mentions solicitors.

As I say, not sure it's possible, and I know Izzet is ridiculously busy at present, but it's an idea!

Izzet,

We badly need an employement board -- positions available and positions wanted. This is a real need.

Agree wholly with tim10 - great idea. Seems there are many posts asking for employment / whats involved in being employed ... even myself has questioned this.

Another idea would be one that would deal with financial affairs: Q&A with an expert on taxes, importing goods, all property purchasing tax issues, how to save on taxes, wills for UK residents in the TRNC, etc... This, however, would require an expert monitor for Q&A purposes. (Q&A=Questions and Answers). A local accountant or attorney with excellent English and knowledge of UK Law is needed. Perhaps a leading atty. or acct. would volunteer for the publicity...It would not hurt that person's business and the entire public would gain.

hi guys

instead of making this a long winded affair all these posts are good ideas, but if all these suggestions were implemted this would take ages to complete and too much work for izzet to do so i say just keep it simple, in these categories you have sub sections listed below

1) general - this would cover just chit chat - unrelated questions etc

2) cyprus knowledge - politics-religion-history-facts-propaganda

3) cyprus living - shopping-bill paying-getting connected to utillities-resturants bars - job section - list of reconmened buisness by posters

4) legal matters - housing buying and selling - stories concerning agents and lawers good & bad - banking - resi and work visas- removels- tax

5) holidays hotels-car hire-travel agents-flights etc

6) a photos section

also you can have a chat room for posters who just want to chat rubbish to each other lol so this way it does not clog up any of the pages, if this is too much trouble then just simply have a notice board

and also if this is not too much, some sort of indication if a member is online/logged in and also a private message option

regards

I'd just keep it simple, Izzet, like it is nowif your not interested don't click on the topic, maybe a specific word search to do what Milou want's but not one for each developent.

Could you have an instant message type of thing?

I think you can have as many catagories as you like, as long as you also have a facility to 'view all messages'.

The downside with having catagories is that it all becomes fragmented with too many seperate discussion topics in different sections and becomes a pain to read. If you could do this alongside a 'view all messages' facility you have the best of both worlds as people looking for specific info can you via the catagory setting whereas others who simply want to keep up with the latest postings all under one heading can do so too....If that all makes sense!

Being a new member, I like the way it is at the moment. My experience of other forums, is that everything ends up in General anyway.
