Hi Charlie 225 , welcome to the forum . I think you will find it is not easy to procure a job in NC . If you scroll down to the bottom of the topic page and click on jobs , you will find all the questions and answers on the subject there .

Good luck , Simbas

In general expats who work in bars here are working illegally, because of the cost and rigmarole of getting work permits.

Also the pay here isn't likely to be enough to live off. You'd also have the constant worry of being caught by the autorities for working illegally and getting deported.

The TRNC fine if, you either rent or buy a completed property with all mains services and deeds AND have a chunk of money to provide a comfortable existence.

Coming over with little or no money and expecting to find well paid employment is a recepie for disaster.

Not negativity, just reality.....

it's very risky, bars, restaurants and shops are opening and closing very quickly. there is no forgone conclusion that it will be a success as there are many established places already. it may be better if you know a Cypriot you can trust to be partners but even that's risky. like Nick says here is lovely if you have money in the bank and your own property. good luck

Best Bet to TRY and get work in the "south".. no work permit necessary, but you could still rent a place in the "north"and se how it would pan out before committing.

Hi Mr Mark,

Any suggestions for jobs in the South? .....ie are there any available? ...... seems to be a big shortage here......

.... the tourism industry up North is doing well ....although this goes against popular belief.....

any thoughts greatly appreciated.

traveller,

I would imagine you'd find work in downtown Nicosia, or possibly with the UN or SBA who have thousands of thirsty Brits looking for drinks. If you don't already speak Greek try starting to learn as it will open more doors than Turkish will.

Traveller,

Admire your positive intensions, but if you have come here to work your pissing in the wind, if I had a £ for every well intentioned brit who came here to work legit and went home penniless I'd be a millionaire. Do your work in the south spend & live North side, dont trust a local, if the lips move there telling lies. dont trust and you may end up with a few bob in yer sky rocket. NN tells it as it is , bless him.

Thanks for the advice guys... did I say ...'I' was looking for a job?....just joining in with the comment by Mark... regards to his line saying...'try' to get work... I assume he means there are few jobs in the South... hence the comparison here..... I think you both may have mis-read or are wanting to add another agenda peut etre?.... then again it was a bit late in the evening.

To work with the UN... you either need a sociology degree in middle eastern studies or water management.... some experience in conflict zones.... ie Georgia or Somalia would also help.

.... ps. as for learning Greek.... I am a little bit similar to Mark in that our partners are linguistically more articulate than ourselves....

Intersesting thought living in the North and working in the South legally, its a shame that in order to work in the south you have to have a sale or rental agreement for a property in the South which does make things a tad difficult, also it has been mentioned before that the ROC administration has told the ROC ministry of Labour that under no terms can a EU citizen who resides in the "occupied areas" be permitted to work within the ROC. A case against the ROC administration on grounds of EU citizens freedom of movement and rights of employment are presently being addressed by the EU ombudsman.
