Do you think we should move from an opt-in to an opt-out system?

In other words do you think we should automatically donate any organ that is deemed to be useful rather than signing up to donate an organ?

If you knew that you were going to automatically donate an organ would you actually sign up to come off the regfister?

Now this one I agree with!

I would happily donate my organs once i'd popped my clogs! (not before obviously!!) Liver may be bit pickled though!

authentichoccie. What's your take on having a system whereby Doctor's can automatically take your organs unless you tell them beforehand. In other words the reverse of what we have now?

I am for it, I'm sure there must be hundreds of cases where the deceaseds families are not aware of their wish to donate and therefore opportunities are missed.

Why not make a difference to someone else's life after your own has finished!

Money and Organs both the same no good to you when you've gone!!!!

Yes, I totally agree. I have not got an organ donation card but I would certainly be willing to give any of my organs (after I'm dead of course!) if it can give someone life or a better one.

Bill I think you should have an automatic opt in & you should have to opt out. By the way Jeans on the warpath, in bed indeed, she's just about to leave for work!

Hi Bill The opt in system was brought in to replace the opt out as it wasnt working. When it was left to the grieving relatives. I think if its your wishes to donate then those wishes should be made known.Carry a card Bill. I worked long and hard introducing the cards on driving licences etc. Its very emotive I know but if we can give life to others ours would have been in vain. xxxxxx

Is there an 'opt in' system in force Lilli? I always thought you had to state that you wanted to donate.

Bill

I assume opt in is when there is no automatic availability of organs, so you have to agree to donate to opt in. i.e.UK.

Opt out is when you have to declare you don't want to donate. i.e.Spain.

I believe one of the problems in the UK is that in the stressful time of a death, many relatives are unaware if the deceased has a donor card and are probably not in a position to search the deceased's house or posessions for a card.

Organs have to be removed very soon after death, so finding the deceased's card a few days later may be of no use.

I don't have a donor card, but have instructed my GP to allow donation. That is now permanently on my medical records, unless I want to change my mind. Your GP will give you the options of allowing all or just certain organs to be available.

Your GP's records are usually sought (online?) by a hospital, thus relieving the stress of relatives having to make decisions or find a card.

What happens in NC? Anyone?

I think there is still a 'stigma' though Rob about actually stating you want to donate. I would like to see the system changed whereby everyone automatically donates unless you carry a card that says otherwise.

Just think how many lives could be saved and changed.

Hi Bill sorry only jusy seen this one. The opt in scheme is the register that is your wishes. I beleive relatives cant over ride. The human tissue act came into force in 2008nwhich can be challenge as can leaving yor body. Thee ae very many websides which will give you info. Robnjo says a lot of truth. If that is your wish then register and always carry the card. Please check out the websites the only one I have isNational Kidney Foundation i think its . org. When the card was first introcduced the family could override the wishes with the opt in the register they cant. Oh bill its so emotive I have sent many an hour or day with relatives and you have to ask if this was my dAUGHTER SON WHAT WOULD i DO. What we do is respect thier wishes. I coud go on and on but it would not be fair but if ever you need any advice email me. There are many website and i was involved with Transplants in mind. I dont have web details. Bil I so proud of what I achieved with tese kidney patients. It changed

Have carried a donor card for 21 years and beleive we should adopt a opt-out scheme.
