Hi Stokesley Lad, re msg 1

I used to live in a ( VERY) hard water area and have had experience of seeing many different solutions.

I personally found the best solution was to have a cold water water softener on the rising main - making sure the drinking water was unsoftened. Softening hot water costs more money.

I wouldn't bother with the so called "softeners" that claim to work by simply fitting a small device "in line".

Benefits..

1/ everything looks cleaner

2/ less soap / chemicals necesary to wash clothes / dishes

3/ equipment lasts longer

Downside:

1/ Must keep salt topped up - not necessary if you're away and not using water

2/ Short -term costs, and you may never get them back, but things look so much cleaner.

3/ slight reduction in water pressure - so if it is marginal, think about a Booster pump/ Storing treated water in a header tank.

Send me an e-mail on vaughan@sunnycyprus.net and I will give you the details of a very effective salt water softener.
