Jst read in the daily mail that as from next year ALL trips out of Britain are to be recorded on a massive data base. Failing to notify going on holiday even for 1 day is a fine of up to 5000 pounds........ Big Brother is here to stay...

They can ask me just as I am getting on the plane/train/ferry where I am going, I sometimes go to europe with work why should I waste my precious time telling some jobsworth what I am up to, especially as I am legally allowed to be here as I was born here and hold a passport. There are privacy laws. They know where I am going already and have seen me on all those CCTV's

Not a scare story the technology has already been tried and tested, it was being tested but we were not made aware of it. The government department are ready to start immediately, you will be required to visit web site in advance and give your travel details the head of borders agency was on television and said he expected government to rubber stamp as so much has already been done with full approval more or less given by ministers.

Fine is £5,000 and will be implemented or entry refused.

load of rubbish, lawyers will have a feild day with this one , i dont think it was this bad in the old soviet union. if gordon brown thinks the great law abiding british public are going to be sold on this hes sadly very wrong.

Sorry to put a damper on this but KK5c is correct, the database HAS been set up already, and has been tested for the last few months. It was announced about 3 months ago, although it received very little press coverage, for some reason....?

I was not aware of the fines though, the next step is ID cards across the EU, and i am told the in the very near future uk passports will be slightly different in layout to accomodate automatic scanning etc.

This sounds like the eborders programme which is being introduced over the next few months. It has been running in a limited capacity for some time now on a small number of destinations. It will run security and criminal records checks on every passenger or crew member entering or leaving the UK via air and sea ports. It is looking for people on terrorist watch lists and those who are wanted for criminal offences. It is designed to keep Britain safe from terrorism and to ensure that offenders are brought to justice. I am not aware of any fines on individuals for failing to notify intentions to travel, although there may be penalties for any Airline / Shipping company that does not forward details of all passengers. The only persons with anything to fear are those with something to hide!

Bill - I am reliably informed (well, Paul said) that yes, there are indeed CCTV's that "talk"; giving various instructions, as Spider said. It was news to me - goes to show how observant I am!!
