| GIRNE/KYRENIA - This is the small Byzantine Chrysopolitissa church (probably built around 1150), one of the most ancient buildings in beautiful Kyrenia. The picture shows the blocked doorway in the narrow lane to the north of this church and is the oldest part, an interesting feature. In 1899 (wrote Enlart) only one (B) of two bases - two thick engaged columns were resting on them - was preserved. Today I checked: one column (C) and the two bases (A and B) are both gone (probably stolen) now... (More about Kyrenia Castle and the walled town during my next reading for the Medieval Cyprus Fellowship: Tuesday March 31, 2009). | So sometime over the last 110 years some one has half inched a column and some old birds washing. Call the police Dutch. |
