Does any one know anything about a green bowls rink opening up. Some while ago there was one rink opened at Sunset and was told there was a lot of interest but since then it has gone quiet

Still luv it It was a project that we looked at a couple of years ago however it is littered with problems. Firstly we would need more than one donum of land to build the clubhouse and greens. Awaiting PTP would have been a major problem. We did have a local partner who would have helped however they wanted to own 54% of the business with no cash injection from them. The did however have the land. Secondly another problem was water. If we opted for a grass green then during the summer we would never be done watering it. If we went for an astro grass surface like they have in the south it still needs watering to stop it from burning too. Given the water shortage it would have meant a desalination plant at considerable investment which made the whole project un-economical. Thirdly the other problem is the climate. During the summer it is far to hot to play bowls. We would only be realistically able to play in the months of March-May and Sept-Nov. .....cont

the winter months would be weather permitting. On a positive note there is a site on the east side of Girne which could be suitable however it would have to be an indoor centre for the reasons listed above. It is something that we are looking at however due to the economic downturn the project will stay on the back burner for the time being. The plans have already been drawn up for it although they have not yet been approved. If that gives an indication of how far down the line we are.

Has anyone thought of contacting the Golf Course. THey have land round it I would have thought could be spared. Have a Clubhouse already and more importantly the desalination plant.

Pearlbayer We asked in the golf club a couple of years ago. At that time they had no plans to do it.

Stubs, 2 years ago the Golf course was only just up and running. Bearing in mind the numbers they were hoping for have not come to fruition, prices dropped etc they may be willing to listen again. Would certainly be another feather in their cap to have such a facility.

Pearlbayer Things may have changed at the golf course however I can only tell you the information they gave us at the time. This was just as the golf course was due to open. For them to open a bowling green it would still be a considerable investment. As, by all accounts the golf club is not getting the numbers they first thought they would, it is highly unlikely that they would invest in a bowling green. I would not imagine that their stance will have changed. The climate and water situation is not conjucive to an outdoor bowling green as per my previous posts. Who wants to play bowls in 100+ heat. Then outdoor season would be too short and thus uneconomical.

Hi Gordon bey I'm not in Cyprus at the moment. I know it is a project that you too had looked at, on some land attached to one of your families hotels. For me as an outdoor project it does not work as it only provides limited bowls time due to the climate.
