The current situation in Britain consists of a mandatory retirement age in the public sector of 60 or 65 and also for many private sector employees. Those who are self-employed or private practitioners are not subject to a mandatory retirement age, thus including judges, doctors, artists, writers, and politicians.

Should the government enforce a mandatory retirement age across the board?

Should everybody be forced to retire at age 65?

Is there an age when one is "past it"?!

Bill

AFAIK, there is no mandatory retirement age in the public sector.

If there was a mandatory 65, at least 89 MP's would be out of work tomorrow.

Hi Rob. I assumed if you were a civil servant you had to retire at 65.

Do you think people should be made to retire at 65?

If people DID retire at 65 it would make jobs available for those who cannot get one in the present economic turmoil

Duster

Yes, but not good news for all the people who are nearing retirement having seen their Pension Funds decimated and desperately need to continue working to make ends meet.

I think many people would be happy to retire at 60/65 if they knew they had a decent State Pension which they had been paying into for 40yrs+.

Age discrimination law as come in to effect and you can not force people to retire at 60/65 in goverment or private sectors.

It would be very nice if people had a decent goverment/private pension so at least we could have a choice to stay at work or enjoy the sunshine in Cyprus.

I didn't have a choice.

My health forced me to retire at 60.

Years of working 50/60/70 hour weeks 'to make ends meet' finally caught up with me.

My state pension and my wifes state pension is to increase by £10 per person per week as from the 6April 2009.In total we will receive £186 per week, not as good as some countries but better than a few.Better than starving to death.

Cruella..How much state pension wouldyou expect to get? dont forget your Health Care has to come out of the NI contribution as well. If I had to pay presciption charges it would cost me £48 per week and god only knows how much if I had to pay the full cost as they do in some EU countries.Like Dusterbruce I had to retire at 65 because of medical problems otherwise I would have carried on for afew years longer but working less hours till eventually I felt I was ready to retire. To suddenly stop working is a big change to your system and it can take some while for you to adjust, but eventually you do,and I have to say I am now enjoying it.Perhaps if we had the same income that the government says is the minimum(£220)it might encourage people too retire at 65..

Coachie me owd mate ........how the devil are you.

Successive govenments have let us all down, if we could have a decent standard of living at retirement and free up some jobs for the youngsters then old age dosen't look so bad but we are lied to and cheated on by people who really don't have to answer for their actions they make life difficult for people who have worked hard all their lives and quite frankly coachie they dony give a damn.

Sad really

We employ a lot of staff aged over 65 mainly on road safety 'School Crossing Patrol' they are required to have a medical and eye test every 6 months some staff are aged 75 and are fit as a fiddle when you speak to them it gives them a reason to get out of bed in the morning and they know that parents and children genuinely appreciate the role they do.

As long as your fit and able age should not matter.

Mandatory retirement is completely wrong for many people. Many of the reasons are in earlier posts:

- Needed to retire earlier for health reasons

- Couldn't afford to retire

- Found a sudden cessation of work psychologically hard

It's also wrong from an employer's point of view. Whatever an employee may be made to feel, all that experience is worth something. There should be more realisation that as people grow older, they may not have the stamina to work full time, but they still have a lot to contribute to organisations.

I'd think a lot of people would find a phased retirement schedule easier to manage than an arbitrary cut-off point.

If any of you happen to go into any B&Q store in england you will find they are a huge employer of older people,o.k. the wages are not brilliant but its a job a lot of younger people dont want to do.Probably because they only pay minimum wage, hence the elder workers, but shop and store workers have never been well paid, this is amazing when you see the profits they make.My wife bought an article in one of these "poor" super stores For £14 and told me the last time she saw this item on the shelf it was for sale at £48.

Croft..The big company I worked for had this phased in retirement policy which worked quite well.Never got to see it because they sold out to a Arab organisation which made us a good offer to take early retirement so we took it and went our merry way. Its like both of us say its a huge shock to the system after the novelty has worn off..
