Does anyone know what a ton of water equates to in either gallons/litres or m3. Reason i ask is i should be able to roughly work out what our bills might be in trnc based on our usage at home which will help our budgeting.

I ton equates to I cu metre, or 250 gallons or 1000 litres. Or lots of air through the pipes also equates to many cu metres of water you have allegedly used in the TRNC.

One ton (British or long) equates 1016 Kg and one tonne (Bloody French) equates 1000 Kg.

One Tonne equates 1000 litres (one cu. metre or 1000000 cu. cms)

One gallon (imperial) equates 4.54609 litres, hence one tonne = 220 gallons

http://www.simetric.co.uk/si_g.htm

Or one ton = 220*1016/1000 = 223 gallons.

So who is correct?

Forget the Imperial System. It makes no sense whatsoever, whether it is used for measuring length, area, volume or weight. It makes about as much sense as our old money did.

The metric system was invented by the French, hence it is idiot proof and understandable by even the dimmest.

so...

20 Fl oz in a pint.

20 cwt in a ton, that's 20 x 112 lb = 2,240 lb

16 oz in one pound, so 16 x 2,240 = 35,840 oz

Everyone keeping up with this?

Now then, 35,840 oz divided by 20 (fluid oz) = 1,792 pints

and 1,792 pints divided by 8 = 224 gallons to one Imperial Ton

I wonder where that extra gallon came from?

And, if we take a metric tonne as 2,200 lb (1,000 x 2.2 lb),

and we say 16 x 2200, divide by 20, and then by 8, as we did above,

then we end up with 220 gallons to a metric tonne.

At least THAT bit came out the same as Ismet's!

Hey! - where's everyone gone? - You're supposed to be paying attention, not sleeping...

You'll be sorry - there's going to be QUESTIONS afterwards!

Msg. 13

Keith,

I cannot fault your result of 224 gallons. Hence one tonne = 224 * 1000/1016=220.5 gallons. So why 220.5 and not 220 gallons as I derived above (msg. 8) ? This is a very good question and I think I know the answer. One cubic centimetre of pure water weighs one gramme at 4 degrees Centigrade, the heaviest point. If the standards are given for 20 degrees centigrade, then one tonne i.e. 1000 kg. should take 220.5 gallons and not 220. I am just guessing without going into the actual numbers.

Gosh, let Vaughan worry about how many gallons he needs to fill his pools

I seem to have started quite a debate.

Thanks for all the replies i think i have a good idea of what to expect my bills to be, thats assuming i know whether in trnc its TON or TONNE.

Cant wait to be there 6 weeks and counting.

Tigger don't worry about all these facts and figures, the only thing to worry about is if enough water will flow through your pipes to fill your tank up Regularly.
