Ok, it was only a matter of time before someone put this up....

In the Words of Harry Hill....

"PC .... Mac .... Which is better?"

Fight!!

Personally, i think Pc's are great if you run out of chairs at a dinner party and need an extra seat.

If you want to use it for anything else, get ready for problems!!

petez. I believe this subject was put up last year. The general consensus then was PC.

I'll try and find the old link for you.

Neither machine is perfect, but each has its niche.

PC's play games very well and have a large amount to choose from. They are the VHS Videos of this world.

For Graphic applications and movie manipulation Macs come out top. They are the Betamax of this world.

It really comes down to "What do you want to do with the machine?" If all you do is use Office applications and surf the web, then go for the cheaper PC version. If you are more serious about photos, graphics and movie s then the Mac.

Hi Petez, re msg 7

The missus thinks Macs look good in the home..but hasn't a clue what to do with one..

I like Windows stuff for work, and her son likes "Ubuntu" .. but try finding a driver for the latest kit... Windows - you stand a chance..

Have to agree with the missus re looks and TimothyCadman re his short and sweet pros and cons..

Macs seem more "exclusive" and I reckon don't offer the same value re Games and "boring" work related stuff...

Petez, we gave my mum a Mac and she emails me regularly - not bad since she's heading for 80 (and that's in the shade). Would she have got that far with a PC - hmnn, dunno.

What I do know is that she's had no genuine 'technical' issues because the operating system is very solid. But there is no 'right' answer. Otherwise, they'd only be one operating system.

I'm a Mac user given the choice - but that's mainly because I'm in magazine publishing, where Macs are standard issue. But there are some applications that don't exist for Mac OS X (Access...) so I have a PC too.

The ultimate 'smug' Mac user payoff is that any Intel-based Mac will run both operating systems, so you don't have to choose.

Greengate8 - any connection with the old Greengate Apple IIe audio sampling system?

mmmmmm - I had to Google 'Ubuntu'! When Adobe and Quark get interested, maybe I will too! From your short comment, I'm guessing even HP can't be bothered. Non-conformist teenagers, eh?

Got them both. After lifetime in IT on PC's I went for a Mac Mini just because of its size and ability to work better under extremes of heat without any cooling problems. Have now had the Mac for three years and would not swop it - unless for another Mac Mini - because it does exactly what it says on the tin.

No problems with the OS and I have all the software I need to use it as much as I wish. It is/was strange getting used to pointing at the other corner of the screen to make it do what I wanted to and switching back and forwards between the Mac and the PC always gave the brain another nudge - but all in all its a good bit of kit.

For me the PC will always be the workhorse as I lived with it for so many years but I must be honest and admit that I could just as easily live without it now.

I think it all depends on what you first started with - after all, have they ever made a better motor bike than an Aerial Square Four???

Since 2 years I been using MAC after having been a devoted MS (Windows) since Windows was born.

Best - depends on your type of usage.

The move from Windows to Mac OS X was super easy.

Still there are things where Windows is far better then Mac OS, especial if you are a gamer.

I use MacBookPro I am on the 2nd, plan to move the the 3rd in a few months.

I will prefer the MBP any time over most Windows based notebooks, why? Casing is aluminium, its light (I travel a lot, but still want a screen I can see) and screen better than may Windows based notebooks.

The BIG minus to the MBP is the cost.

For people with no previous or little experience with PCs I will any time recommend an MAC as its more simple to learn and to install/delete applications on, and Mac OS X is a very bit more stable than Windows (XP, Vista) but I been playing with Windows 7 the past 3 months and its much better than any previous Windows, so - maybe MS have something...

By 2 cents...

To Croft - no connection at all....

To Petez

I have used both PC & Mac over a period of years and i always come back to the PC.

I agree with some of the above comments - Mac's are better for graphics work, and are easy to get on with/learning.

I find PC's better for multitasking and working with music & video (which demand a fast system with plenty of memory).

As to the operating system - Windows XP is the more stable system (for me) - and vista uses to much memory.

I have used Ubuntu, and it is faster than windows, but takes a bit of getting used to, but its free and more applications are being added weekly. Both Ubuntu & Windows will happily work on the same machine.

In general - get the fastest computer you can afford and don't stint on the screen size, if you want to watch DVD's or TV programs on-line.

Best of luck with your choice - if i can answer any queries contact me on-board.

I'm amazed what different experiences we've had working with video on the two platforms. I installed a Pinnacle board and Adobe Premiere on a PC. 18 months later, I knew quite a lot about resolving IRQ conflicts but still hadn't got a stable system. I finally admitted defeat and bought a Mac copy of Premiere. That mean I lost my analogue box but using the FireWire port only, I was up and running in more like 18 minutes. I can even edit full res video on my little MacBook laptop - and still use it as a general purpose work machine.

I suppose to some extent, the difference is down to how well you know the operating system. I started out on Mac OS7. PCs were always a bit of a mystery to me (bad command or file name?) pre Windows.

Here's the answer from the one and only expert in this matter (the old battle "PC versus Mac"), Bill Gates:

Haha!

(Of course, a lot of people tend to forget that Gates has a substantial shareholding in Apple.)

There was a time when Macs were differentiated from PC's by hardware as well as the OS. Those days are long gone.

At the hardware level there is no difference between the current Macs and non Mac PCs - other that is than the price, except for a little chip that is supposed to stop non macs from running OSX (but does not in reality). For me that is the big problem with Macs. Personally I find it hard to justify paying 30-50% or more for harware just for the privilege of having Appple choose and assemble these components for me.

At the OS level in terms of functionality and stability and easy of use there is in my view no compelling difference between OSX and say Windows Vista. The main difference between them is in the range of applications and hardware that they support, with OSX loosing out to Vista in this regard.

We've been laptop users for years, but my hubby bought me a Macbook for my birthday 2 weeks ago. It's amazing. Runs windows as well so I can still use it for my boring work stuff, but the Leopard software is awesome. I love my Mac and can't think of a single reason why I would go back to a traditional PC.
