The latest "consideration" put before the EU legislature is an order banning the use of Miss or Mrs on any business etc before them. Not fair to women apparently? Who dreams up these crazy pc orders? Not so long ago they were asked to consider ways of forcing farmers to find a way to stop cattle and sheep from farting because they produce far more methane than humans in damaging the ozone layer? Are they full of wind or what? As it is now almost impossible to buy an ordinary 100/150wtt bulb in the uk because of EU directives..(you can buy greener energy bulbs for five times the cost) I was wondering whether you can still buy such bulbs in Cyprus? I begin to wonder just how many of these useless laws by useless politicians from such a corrupt institution can continue... or go unnoticed? Any I've missed? Regards Joseph

Joseph, never mind the EU what about these strange UK laws: It is illegal for a lady to eat chocolates on a public conveyance. Any boy under the age of 10 may not see a naked manequin. It is still an offence to beat or shake any carpet rug or mat in any street in the Metropolitan Police District, although you are allowed to shake a doormat before 8am. It is illegal to leave baggage unattended, and picking up abandoned baggage is an act of terrorism. Londoners are not allowed to keep a pigsty in the front of their homes. It is illegal for a Member of Parliament to enter the House of Commons wearing a full suit of armour. It is legal for a male to urinate in public, as long it is on the rear wheel of his motor vehicle and his right hand is on the vehicle.

A law introduced in 1307 ensures that the head of any dead whale found on the British coast becomes the property of the king and the tail belongs to the queen - should she need the bones for her corset. All English Men over 14 are meant to carry out 2 hours of longbow practice each weekand supervised by the local clergy. This law dates from the middle ages when there was no regular British army and local gentry were ordered to train a quota of knights, archers, infantry, etc. As the church was the official local instrument of beauracracy, they were deployed. The areas firing range was generally called a 'bottom' and many still exist such as Trotters Bottom in Hertfordshire. London Hackney Carriages (taxis/cabs) must carry a bale of hay and a sack of oats. This was because they were originally horse drawn, this was repealed in 1976. It is still illegal for cab drivers to carry rabid dogs or indeed corpses and by law they must

NoID... Brilliant Some of them are so funny... Do you think they don't repeal them because they are so quintessentially English and allow the yanks and others to see us as such... ie so very English and quaint Regards Joseph

Joseph - I guess these crazy ideas are dreamt up by people who are paid a lot of money for non-jobs but need to find ways of justifying their existence.

Dear Joeseph, re msg 1 The EU.. "nutty".. I do know what you mean. and isn't strange that the EU Commission can't get their accounts"signed off" ? ! BUT.. We haven't had a WAR between EU members - the cost of that is priceless and we can ( should be ) able to move freely around the EEA area ( live / work) - or make the bu**ers "pay" if they stop you and the low energy, long life, light bulbs ( 75W eqiv) are on offer at Tesco for 34p for two - that's 17p each.... ;)

No1Doyen re msg3, you mention that "The area's firing range was generally called a 'bottom'" - in archery today, they're called "Butts"... Any connection, I wonder? Keith.

Some more crackers EU have introduced a new transport law to try to stop public transport drivers falling asleep at the wheel etc by banning drivers driving more than 30 miles. In order to act within the law, buses must now stop, the passengers get off and then back on again while the driver changes the number on the bus before continuing. If travelling say 100 miles or so you have to do this twice? EU , worried that busty barmaids may get skin cancer when they go outside to collect customers glasses have ordered that all barmaids must now "cover up" and not show too much cleavage. EU, new law comes into effect today March 20th... to prevent sexual harassment in pubs barmaids can no longer be referred to as "luv" and other such endearments, if so, barmaids can now sue the landlord for sexual harassment. Harriet Harman decided to enact the law without any discussion in parliament because... well I won't bore you... rather you had a laugh Regards Joseph

Dear Turtle , re msg 17 When a person talks of "peace" after nearly 250K people were ethnically cleansed, disenfranchised and more people killed / maimed in a month period they are obviously someone with whom sensible debate isn't going to be possible. Your "peace" and it's solution are unacceptable and THAT is why the Cyprus problem is still an issue...

Mark, I was merely stating a "Fact" something you constantly ram down peoples throat. There has been "peace" for the last *35 years* simple as that, I was not getting into the "why's and what fors" of pre "74". And as for "sensilble debate" with you, *I* would rather have all my teeth pulled as the "mental trauma" would be less painful and probably more pleasurable.

Dear Turtle re msg 19 Thank you for so succinctly demonstrating my point.. your FACT isn't even correct.. and WHAT am I ramming down your throat.. ?! Could it be the fact that the current situation isn't acceptable to the international community and (even TCs) AND that they manage quite well to coexist without the need for a large UN peace-keeping force - or even the TR army ! Perhaps if you laid off the Rioja more you might have spotted that even our TC contributors doubt some of the "stunts" pulled for your "peace" are / were wanted BY TCs...

Ha Ha...Taking the "pikey" approach eh and its all down to me being a drunken sot. So lets hear from all these TC,s who you mention, perhaps they could give us a more balanced veiw. By the way Mark, have you considered trying a different approach to your postings as most "normal" people take umbrage to being spoken to by someone who sounds like a primary school teacher !

Educated people will know that Ms is the shortened form of Mistress and was first used to denote a difference from Mrs (married woman) and Miss (unmarried). It is believed that the feminist movement in the 70,s then claimed this form of address for all women in order to progress their movement. However... deportment not the point I raise... this is now (or will be) a directive. Directives become law and are enforcible by fines etc... We had a laugh when they brought out their directive on the correct shape of bananas... but they enforced it... the farmer in Yorkshire who continued to sell fruit and veg in pounds and ounces because that was the preference of his customers couldn't laugh because they dragged him through the courts... such examples are legion... but the point is... these directives are/can be enforced by EU law to the detriment of common sense and well being of ordinary people? This is what is frightening. Joseph

Dear Turtle, re msg 23 1/ So we should ignore your posts that you had consumed three bottles of Rioja before posting?! .. Sorry, but as ErolZ says irony doesn't work on forums ;) 2/ There have been MANY threads where TC posters have agreed that they aren't sure that the importation of mainland Turks or "Turkification" of the island were necessary and they bemoan the practices of repressing of freedoms. If you haven't been paying attention... :( 3/ Why isn't MY viewpoint - one that reflects that of my Countries ( IRL/ UK) "balanced" ... ! Suggest you find a Turkish speaker to read you some back copies of Afrika or similar TC newspapers... Sadly, I have indeed lowered myself to a style exhibited by your good self....

Mark, lighten up You need to understand the human behaviour a bit better and it goes like this..... you say something and I disagree. I have an opinion of you and you of me..... so what But where in the bible of life does it say that we must listen to you and agree with every post you make......my veiw is you don't take critism very well and really do have a problem with being questioned and to me thats the failing of the man. I do not wish to engage any more with you as in my opinion you have an arrogance about you that.... well really......is annoying

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where! More komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a dete

Part 2. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas. If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.
