I attended a funeral yesterday of a lady who sadly died of cancer. Both her grown up son and daughter were there, obviously, but what went through my mind was the sad fact that she spent a number of years not speaking to her son, who lives in the same village, over a family row. There was a reconcilliation but, as you rightly say, life's too short and time cannot be taken back.
