Did anyone else notice the reference in Cyprus Today about the BRS having to revert to the 2000 constitution?

This will mean that non-Brits cannot be members of the organisation.

Hans will not be amused!

RE msg 1: I also read that one of the eight policy changes (planned to put on a vote by six BRS members) reads as follows: "The society should aim to be seen as the main voice of all TRNC expats." Going to be an interesting meeting! PS. I smell a refund of the contributions paid by my wife and me...

Hans; the eight "policy changes" wanted by the Ozankoy mafia are not going to happen because of the government ruling that prohibits constitutional change. This is the reason for the 2000 reference.

Newscoop, now you have me really confused! Am I an "Illegal Associated Member" or not? How can I sleep tonight?

Simply put; You weren`t an associated member in 2000 so you`re not one now.

Sorry mate, read the article.

I think you're right. One would think that the committee would have consulted a lawyer(s) before non-Brits were allowed to become "associated members". Well, it looks like the end of this love affair... Thanks for explaining, Newscoop.

Hans; I think you`ll find the committee acted in good faith, the 2000 thing is apparently a government cock up.

Newscoop, a statement, just for the record: I don't doubt the good faith of the BRS-committee at all - I have not *one* bad experience with the BRS. And most members I've met are very pleasant Brits. I wouldn't want to change my life amongst (most of) the Brits in TRNC for life in Holland.

PS. The above said, there are some old fashioned, Europhobic people in every community of course.

RE msg 10, Hippo > I am totally committed to Europe as long as they all stay there. <

===> Well, one can fight anything in this world - but stupidity.

RE msg 11, cyprusishome > Hippo - here, here!! <

===> Confused. Do you happen to mean "hear, hear"? Or does your Hippo really listen when someone shouts here, here?

===> Wow, you're not kidding?! PS. Don't forget to ask whose blood you get when one day you may need it... It may have belonged to a bl**dy non-British foreigner. Brrrr.

Miserable so and so Hippo and "friends" Why can't all ex-pats join. Surely they would be able to put different prospectives on things. I hate this Insular kind of stuff from the British. Why can't we just welcome all ex-pats? We're all in the same boat.

I handed over an Irish Passport in the cabin five years ago and was told ' sorry British Passport holders only'. As it happens I do hold a British Passport too but have never darkened the Cabin's door since, nor will I.

RE Happy_Hussar: I did the same five years ago (Dutch passport) and was told the same as you. Then I suggested the BRS Committee to reconsider the rule "British passport holders only" - the *majority* of the BRS was *not* narrow-minded during an AGM and changed this rule (whether this change was/is valid, I don't know yet - see postings above).

The exact wording of the Rule "EU-passport holders can become associated members of the BRS" can undoubtedly be obtained from the BRS (Fridays in The Pegasos, Karaoglanoglu, Saturdays in The Hut, Girne).

I still think, living in TRNC, that "Residents" in BRS is far more important than "British". And nobody has to worry: associated members cannot vote nor hold any office.

BRS was set up many years ago for British Residents as a social function and to assist them in times of need. If I remember right there is another organisation that offers all foreign residents similar facilities.

It is advertised on the same board as BRS outside Girne main post office.
