NICOSIA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Cyprus President Demetris Christofias expressed his concern on Monday over the forthcoming elections in the Turkish Cypriot north, fearing a possible win by right-wing parties would deal a blow to the ongoing reunification negotiations.

Christofias, also the island's Greek Cypriot leader, has engaged in peace talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat since September 2008. The two sides have agreed in principle to reunify the island within the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality. But they differ on how it should work.

The parliamentary elections scheduled for April 19 in the Turkish Cypriot north will determine the next administration, and opinion polls have put the right-wing opposition National Unity Party in the lead. No matter which party wins, Talat will remain as the "President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" until the next "presidential election" in April 2010.

However, Chris

Continued:However, Christofias pointed out that it would be "very difficult for Talat to move on and implement the policy he is trying to implement at the talks today," if the opposition party win the parliamentary elections.

"If we don't reach an agreement with Mehmet Ali Talat, who is considered to be a progressive person, I don't know if we will ever reach an agreement," added Christofias.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 when the Turkish military intervened and occupied north of the island following a coup by a group of Greek officers.

In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot authorities declared breakaway and set up "the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which is recognized only by Turkey.

Does Dimitris seriously think he's the one to bring an end to the so called "cyprus problem"?

It's his community's fault for rejecting the Annan plan, now they will suffer the consequences.

I truly HOPE these talks will fail, COMPLETELY.........

When the UBP or TDP come into place, they will reliazse how stupid it was for them to decline the annan plan.......but it will be too late......

I can't see much progress at the moment, things started out very positive but the last couple of months things have cooled a lot.

I think the gap between them is just too wide.

And is it because that the longer the GC side stalls the better they think their bargaining position gets?

andy, I agree the longer it goes on the less likely there will be any kind of reunification.

But it is interesting to note that there are some on this forum that advocate that the TC people do not want to align with Turkey........this seems a total fallacyin light of opinion polls

Turtle

I have always maintained that the TRNC will become a recognised province of Turkey. And I am willing to put money on it.

"They have the vast majority of public support in the north"

I have yet to see a poll that gives them over 50% support. They are showing the largest support of any party in polls currently but thats not the same as saying they have a majority of public support, let alone vast. The chances are they will need to form a coalition to form a government.

Dear AJ,

"I have always maintained that the TRNC will become a recognised province of Turkey. And I am willing to put money on it. "

I thought "Mersin 10" WAS a province of Turkey !

I'm still offering that "TRNC" will not be recognised in 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 years and only two takers.. may be you'd like to bet on that one, AJ ;)

could be to do with the north having more settlers than tcs, who now think they are tcs... god help the original tcs who still class themselves as cypriots & want nothing more than to have this island for all cypriots...

It would bee logical for the TRNC to be shown to the international world as a province of Turkey, but in effect, maintain it's current laws, politics, migration restrictions etc.

What a perfect nation it shall be then........

International politics and the "CyProb" have almost no bearing whatsoever on this election.

Rather it will be decided by how the electorate - original TCs and naturalized - consider the internal administration of the country to have been handled under the present CTP led Parliament.
