Is it true there is no tax to pay on 25 year old car? If so what is the process

Intersting question, recently the TRNC administration decided that a newish car imported to the TRNC, lets say 4 years old on arrival becomes a new car i.e off the shop floor and is taxed as a new car, if this law is correct then a vintage car on arrival will also be deemed as a new car and taxed accordingly.

However it most be noted that the current administration are desperate for money and will go any length to take Johnny foriegners cash, because "we are all loaded"! (naturally)

Any car over 25 years old is considererd as a classic car in the TRNC. (Not Kit Cars). Before importing to NC, the car must be registered in your name in address in the UK. You will need to become a member of one of the 2 Classic Car Clubs in the TRNC. You will require proof of the price of the car at its year of manufacture. If the manufacturer is no longer in exsistance you will require an official letter from the Classic Car owner Club for the same model.

The Classic Car Club in NC will apply on your behalf to antique dept confirming it is a classic car. You then need to apply to Ministry of Trade & Commerce for an import licence. Then the car can be shipped to a TRNC port.

You will be charged custom for the price of the car on its year of manufacture.

ie Austin Seven 1928 was £145 new, container cost from UK approx £1000 and cost of clearance approx 600 YTL. After tax cost will be approx £800.

Amber is correct and I can confirm that the road tax is treated as if it is a new car, i.e. the date of registration in this country is what counts. The amount of import tax that you will pay will be in the region of 45% of the car's original price at the date of manufacure. This is for cars of European manufacture. I think it is higher if the car is not European.

The above messages are correct but the annual road tax has a 50% discount for classic cars. This does not help me much as it's based on weight and mine weighs nearly 3000kg. Even with 50% discount it's 1500 TL per year. Hence it stays in the garage.

It the E.U. my road tax is FREE.

its a porsche 911 carrera. a belter. ive had it 10 years. might not exactly be ideal for staying up the hill in catalkoy.however if i got it in for zilch it would be worthwhile. Problem is these cars were £16000 new. How do you find the car clubs? Im back over tomorrow night.

Thanks JIM

Mr Salih Celiker is the Chairman of main Classic Car Owners Club in TRNC Mobile No 0533 862 3578.

This man is very helpful. He is the owner of The Rally Centre for car accessories in Lefkosa, near to the main bus terminal.

Jim if it was £16k new then you will pay approx 40% of that value plus the registration costs and road tax.

IMPORTING CARS TO NORTH CYPRUS

August 2008.

Vehicles over 5 years of age can be imported only if the Log Book (V5) proves that the person wishing to import has owned the vehicle for five years or more.

Otherwise the vehicle must be a maximum of five years old.

If you already have a car in your use in N. Cyprus then the car being imported must be a maximum of three years old.

Tax

A vehicle from a European country attracts a Tax of 55% Plus:

+ 1000.oo usd + vat if it is less than 1600 cc

+ 2500.oo usd + vat if it is between 1600 cc & 2000 cc

+ 3000.oo usd + vat if it is 2000 cc plus

If the vehicle is not European the Tax is 79.76 % instead of 55%

Sorry Tootie but you are behind the times.

Duties have changed and are based on engine size & value.

E.G. car value $15,000

car engine size 3164cc @ $5.02 = $15,883 tax

plus 10% stabilisation fund = $17471 tax

plus 2.5% military fund = $17907 tax

plus 4.4% dock expenses = $18694 tax

plus 4% stoppage =$19441 tax

plus v.a.t. @20% of the cost of the car plus shipping and insurance.

=$22,941

Bloody expensive isn't it.

Full details here. http://www.e-kktc.com/index.php?men=3352

You may need to double click the link twice.

These are NOT the figures for CLASSIC CARS.
