Is anyone else sick to death of worrying about being accepted for a renewel of residency, or whether your boss will get you a new work permit...doesn't it piss you off that while you do everything in your power to be legal and pay your taxes, there are so many brits trying to con the system...i for one am getting more and more angry at those that try to take the piss and live the life of riley, without ever making some kind of commitment, like working with no permit or nipping across the border for a temp residency, or forging paperwork and bank documents to gain a years permit....This behaviour would not be tolerated in the UK, so why should we expect the TC to tolerate it from us?????

They wouldn't do this kind of stuff in UK. I too am pissed off with people who just can't be honest. I am never ever worried because we keep within the law at all times. This country belongs to the Turkish Cypriots and we should obey their laws. Do everything by the book and you will always feel better not having to worry about knocks on the door. The TC's are not stupid and know who the baddies are. They will get their come-uppance. BE LEGAL

The only problem with the above posts is that most Cypriots would tell you it isn't necessary to have work permits, if you are a EU citizen, and you need only register and pay 8 Euros for five years for residency..

That's in the bit of Cyprus where the recognised govt exercises effective control..

"Legal" in Cyprus is a very debatable thing..

Where did you get the info on no work permit if an EU citizen and the €8 for 5 years residency? Are you talking about the North or South or/and is it a quote from a Greek Cypriot rather than a Turkish Cypriot? Just a little confused is all. Thanks

Msgs 4 & 5,

Not wanting to cause any controversy, but if you re-read mmmm's message 3, it says -

"most Cypriots would tell you it isn't necessary to have work permits, if you are a EU citizen, and you need only register and pay 8 Euros for five years for residency..

That's in the bit of Cyprus where the recognised govt exercises effective control.. "

That's mmmmm 'code' for SOUTH CYPRUS !

Keith.

Russian official opinion...well, it depends on who you listen to

Russian smbassador to Ankara referring to the example of Caucasus region said "Russia sholud/would (unclear) recognize the TRNC right after Turkey recognizes South Ossetia and Abkhazia"

On the other hand Russian ambassador to Athens referring to the recognition of the independence of North Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia said that their case is absulutely different and "unique".

Following the war in Georgia, several Russian foreign ministy officials said Russia would not recognise TRNC.

Mehmet Talat told russian newspaper "kommersant" that Russia had double, even multiple standards, i.e. she makes her own standards for each new case.

Sorry, no English links.

Many thanks.

It does seem that most Nations are sitting on the fence.

I am getting the feeling that 'recognition' of the TRNC has nothing whatsoever to do with the re-unification of Cuprus, but more to do with the International Politics of Strategic Access.

Most interestingly : Two Ulster Politicians register their "interests" and refer to the "TRNC" without the " "'s - I must have a word with the NIA ;)

Dear Gates, re msg 10

"as for mmmm you must be another ilegal"

Sounds like you might have "some wires crossed" - YES, I know your profession ;)

Perhaps YOU can answer me this? I've asked it several times and no-one seems to know the answer..

If the EU has "nought" to do with it.. then WHAT is to stop an EU Citizen working in the "area of Cy where the govt has effective control" - just like TCs can? THAT is under the rules of the EU - they are only "suspended" re what YOU call "TRNC".

No work permit necessary - but WHO taxes the TCs ? To whom do they pay N.I contributions - social insurance..

Lastly, I was quite legal *officially* re Cyprus - well apart from not changing my driver's licence..sssh !
