A journalist told us recently that he had been to a meeting with Macdonalds, they said they were prepared to open here, along with american banks.

Oh no I thought, gone will be days that we can say to our children ' sorry can't go to Macdonalds today our accountant has the passports!'. Any way - ı was prayıng thıs man was wrong, when to my horror last week in Lefoşia i saw 2 bıg yellow M's with BIG MAC underneath them! This was on the same road as the popular California restaurant, or the Toros. So now we must wait and see if ıt is the real thing or if it is a good copy!!!

But if it is MacDonalds ı truely believe things will never be same again - some changes are definately good - but i don't like this one!

This can only be a good thing, when you get a multi national company coming

to NC it will start to break down the walls of injustice NC has gone through, maybe Marks and sparks etc next.

they have a TESKO in Magusa, they have a TESCO (spelt properly, but obviously not the real tesco) in Guzelyurt.

There was also the talk about how Burger City is owned by the company who own the BURGER KING rights in Turkey, but just changed the name for legal reasons.

Then theres the KFC in Lefkosa. Expect the KFC logo isnt an old white american man, its an old white Turkish man!

But NO way is there a MCdonalds in North Lefkosa. GC's would go hysterical and explode......literally explode!

Maccy Dees eh whatever next maybe Kiss me Quick hats and candyfloss. You need to realise that if the direct flights come and embargoes are lifted and Disney world is built in Pyla then this will just be the tip of the iceberg.

msg 22....if all this was to happen, wouldn't that mean, house vendors could put their prices back to normal and actually get sold...? Also wouldn't this bring in a lot more needed jobs!!

Whilst driving around Cyprus, it really hits me on how much space there is here, so if you find it all getting too full of people, you can always move to a quieter spot.

At the end of the day, you can't stop progression, and if building a Maccy D's is the start, then bring it on...although i much prefer Burger King

Daisy,

Its hard to strike a balance the north needs money to move forward. But with money comes more commercialism. This in turn brings jobs and more infrastructure. On the other hand the north could loose its natural beauty and charm and within 20 years be the same as the south.I suppose you have to ask yourself what you want.Ipesonally would like to see two states but embargoes lifted.

I think you will find that KFC and MacDonalds registered their trademarks and copyrights along with other commercial details i.e logos e.t.c in the TRNC in the mid 1980's. Recently a KFC that has been closed down through the courts in Lefkosa for breching international copyright and franchise rules, if the "Big Mac" is using the logos of an international company who registered its interests in the TRNC then they will also face criminal charges, as is the case and knowing the legalities of the former KFC which was well publicised in the Turkish language media I imagine that like Burger City (King) this will be the real deal.

only time will tell - of course the locals want it - i have a friend who goes to Istanbul for Macdonalds! I think alot of us brıts just don't like the idea of place becoming like the south, but we need progression.

I love the bowling alley at the bottom of Ozanköy - that does not go wıth charming sıde of the trnc , we all used to love, but ıt is a great idea, ıt wıll be full of locals, and ıt wıll be another attractıon for tourısts thıs sıde of the mountain.

ınterstıng tımes....

but please if it is the real macdonalds - don't tell my kıds!

Thank god what happens here isn't down to the law of the brits cos most of you would keep these poor tc's like mushrooms..your arrogance astounds me, what gives anyone other than the tc's the right to moan about anything that happens here, all you lot are frightened of is losing your high interest rates...why don't you all go and ask the tc's what they want and stop trying to keep this place in the dark ages.

Deecyprus4 - Not clear what you are saying in message 34. Are you saying that TCs will not want McDonalds?

Get real lady, if it comes to pass that McDonalds is opened in the North, it will be full of TCs!

I think Dee is picking up on a few posts by Brit's and then making a massive generalisation that we all (except her of course) want to keep the TCs down.

I think she may be a little annoyed (mad)

yes, we all know how unhealthy mcdonalds is, but that one branch of mcdonals in the TRNC could change everything. This nation has been under 34 years of almost ultimate international isolation.........if mcdonalds opens up, it would most definately be followed by many other co-operations, which the TRNC economy could desperately do with.

you do realise the franchaise for mcdonalds in cyprus is gc owned!!! when the island is reunified the north will get there mig macs,& there will be plenty of jobs for the tcs, the gc owner of the franchaise is a refugee from the north & his wish is to get his homeland back again & get it on to an equal par as the rest of the island. this also goes for M&S, Ikea etc.....

The lunatic fringe(s) at their very worst. Can't we have a special bit of Cyprus just for the mad zealots? The rest of us could then get on with enjoying whats left of this island.

Dear Juliet, re msg 42

"mig Macs"

As you say - I though the McD's in the "rump" RoC were indeed owned by a GC family.. I guess the Russians bought 'em out ))

Dee, re msg 45

if you are going to tell someone they talk "rubbish" - be sure to check the colour of your pots and kettles.. "there's no mosques in the south? " ringing any bells...

Jay76, re 47

"The north is always going to be TRNC nothing will change that its to late, got to accept it"

If you are so sure. may be you would like to back up that "assertion"

I say that "TRNC" will NEVER be recognised and you can set a time limit on the bet.. funnily enough only two people have ever taken me up and both will be paying up at the end of this year.. my money is "safe"..
