It will cost an arm and a leg and maybe more. Depends where manufactured, depends on weight, depends on age. You need to check out

the current government regulations.

In past it was 40% of glasses guide plus 1200 dollars, this is duty only and provided made in Europe, if not its 60%. Then you need to register it, cost anything between 500 and 2500 liras and if they stick ZT plates on thats another 1200 to 1500 lira.

Don't bring it, flog it at home and tap into the local market. Ex pats flogging their gas guzzlers cheap as it costs an earth to tax them.

Buy a new Corsa for 13500 Euros or maybe a Kia Ceed for 25K sterling!!

Its a mad mad world, car wise in this otherwise lovely lovely Island

The value placed on the vehicle by customs apparently does not have to bear any resemblance to Glasses Guide.

You would have to think what the market value would be in a true market, then work out a rate of over 60% and up to 100% from that.

Then add the transport costs and the hassle values.

It really is not worth trying to bring a vehicle now. Sell in UK for best price, add to it the money you save on taxes and you should get a decent vehicle here. We did.

hi, Lot of myth around this subject, let's have some actual data.....I drove my 2005 Nov 2.5 L diesel Ford Ranger over and have first hand experience as I taxed it last month at the end of the first year here.

It cost me £3,500 in import tax, 985 ytl to register it with proper plates, and 800 ytl to tax it for a year.

I got a fab deal from the UK garage bought it new, it has been an extremly worthwhile exercise to do this with the benefit of a "new" car suitable for my lifestyle here in TRNC, and probably the last vehicle I will ever own.

Just researched a private sale vehicle for a friend, 1996 4 x 4 Diesel Bighorn, £7,500 registered and with tax.

"Gas guzzlers" ? well, I live 1/2 mile up an unmade road, just about impassable in the rainy season with a normal car, and do a lot of DIY carrying stuff to the house so a large 4 x 4 is for me the perfect vehicle.

Road Tax and Diesel costs? - Roll with it, It's a fact of life, much better than squashing into a roller skate.

i'm interested in which model range you brought here because our wildtrack cost us much more in duty?

also about a month ago they stopped allowing private people to bring in the doublecabs, unless you are a business owner.

for the record i will say it again customs here DONT HAVE A COPY OF GLASS'S GUIDE!

they make the price up as they go along!

"or maybe a Kia Ceed for 25K sterling!!"

Just for info I bought a new Kia Ceed in TRNC mid 2007. 1.6l diesel (High Power Output) near full trim for just under £16,000 (sterling).

I have a South Cyprus registered Kia Ceed 1400cc which I am looking to import (customs impounded it a couple of nights ago). Customs have quoted me approx £3300 import taxes, can anyone give me an indication as to what my other costs will be (registration, emissions etc). Stupid question but i don't suppose the TRNC administration have a website with this info ??

All info gratefully accepted.

Regards

Paul

Re message 5

The customs house in Lefkosa most definitely DO have the latest edition of Glasses guide.

I was in their office last week and I saw it.

They were very helpful and calculated the exact import duty according to the new rules on engine size and VAT according to the valuation in Glasses guide.

The import duty is calculated on engine size - see http://www.e-kktc.com/forms/printmenu.php?lan=en&id=3352

the VAT is calculated from the valuation in Glasses guide.

If you need help contact Ozner Agit in the custom department on 0542 853 0977.

Please note that there is a 50% reduction on import duty of cars less than 1650cc until end June.

Does Ozner speak good English? I'd like to seek his advice over the phone before we come over from the UK about getting the car legalised.

His English is reasonably good (as it is for the others in his office).

He put it in writing for me in his office.

That really is all I can say - hope it helps.

they may now have a copy but i guess they don't know how to use it,lol.

top prices are usually for showroom retailers with very low milage and full service historys in imaculate condition.

maybe i should pop past and educate them.

just don't go there with it.

some people seem to think the authorities here are stupid, but they are not slow when it comes to extracting money from people.

I was informed the trick was to buy/rent a PO box on the south side as being your address, Greek insurance and all their paper work, make a few crossings a month and you're safe and legal. Saw a few TRNC plated cars for sale on Greek garage forecourts a few months ago and was curious about that one! Drug dealers doing a runner?

"Its no trick"

You have to get insurance on the car when you drive over the boarder we hired from the southside payed 20 pound(insurance) for 7 days??? if the police on the northside control you and you hav,t got the insurance ? then its happy hour for you...Pay-Time.

Pleased to say that car is now 'sorted' customs duty paid, car tax and regsitration done, and new plates. What a pleasant experience the authorities make it! Took 4 days.

If considering bringing a car out, simple advice is Don't!

Many many thanks to those on this forum for the advice re this process especially Hippo from another forum. We had your advice printed out and with us for guidance. Cost a fortune.

Biggest shock was registration and years road tax. 90ytl to register and get new log book. Years car tax 962.50! Worked out on weight x 0.70ytl. Our estate car weighed 1375kgs. Tip here, when getting car weighed as part of process, strip it to bare parts and don't fill it with petrol as we had done the day before (locals even take car seats out). Now have legit car - hooray!

That much poorer and wiser though.

That might have worked in the past but not so sure it would work these days. We got caught during the recent purge, even though we were still entitled to use our vehicles on a tourist visa. Basically, if you live in the North for the majority of the year then you will not be allowed to drive a South registered car. However, if you only come over for short periods then you might be able to get away with what you allude to in your message.

bought in a Mitsubishi Warrior 2.800 cc 1995 diesel cost me £3200 import tax 1200 dollars import duty and 400 ytl to back hand the "Runner " to sort it out(Otherwise exspect at least 2/3 attempts to register it) Road tax by weight and diesel(petrol cheaper) cost me 2208ytl for 1 year.Hope this gives you some idea of cost.If its a Crew cab back not a car as such You will have major problems as I believe that the impot of this type of viehicle are now only allowed for buisness owners now.

Hi I have a home in the TRNC and I would like to know, if I brought over my Astra 2001 plate,if it would be accepted and how much tax would I have to pay? Also does anybody know If I was to drive my car over say from England on a travelling holiday too stay in the TRNC how long it would be able to stay in the country for, suppose it broke down and I left it in my garage in the TRNC and I had to fly home, what would happen then would the car have to be registered or dumped or would I be able to keep it over there ????

Something else to consider,The cooling systems on u/k sourced vehicles are not the same as cars in hot country. We sent a Range Rover to Australia and it could not be driven far before tempature guage went too high.We had to fit different radiator, water pump and fan blades before it could be used.
