my friend last week unfortunately had a stroke and now he is in intesive care and we dont know the outcomming. i think people should be aware of how to recognize a stroke. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness means disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people near by fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

So try to remember the 3 steps called STR.

S Ask the individual to Smile

T Ask the person to Talk or answer any simple question

R Ask him or her to raise both arms

Another sign of a stroke is this: ask the person to “ stick” out their tongue…if the tongue twisted or crooked,if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he/she has trouble with any of these task call immediately the paramedics or a doctor and describe the symptoms. If you do it you probably save their life. I hope you will remember or save this post. it could save live.

One thing I would say is dont think a stroke is the end of the world.I had one 8 years ago and was lucky enough to recover quickly and was back at work in a month.I still have to take blood thinners but it was responsible for one of the better things in our life in that it focused our attention on what was important to us.One year later we had sold up and moved to Greece, where we stayed till 4 weeks ago and are now here in Cyprus.Had it not been for the stroke we may never have done it.

There is an advertising campaign going on in the UK at the moment for this.

F ace has it fallen to one side? Can they smile?

A rms Can they raise both arms and keep them there?

S peech is there speech slurred?

T ime to call 999/112 if you see any of these signs.

In the UK their running a stroke advert, it is called, "FAST", the stroke starts in the brain like a small fire gradualy getting bigger stroke recognition is as follows, :

FAST stands for

F= Face, has the face droped to one side,

A= Arms, can they raise their arms and hold them there

S= Speach, can they talk

T= Time is important, call for emergency services, the quicker emergency services, arrive the more of the person you save

Hope this helps

stroke,

Look out for Paralyis,Facial droop, change in mental status,Abnormal speech, arm drift,

Another stroke assesement Technigue is to have the patient .close his/her eyes and hold his/her arms outstreched in front for at least 10 seconds .If the patients arms slowley drift back downs towards his/her side .It is likely that they have suffered a stroke .Any asymmetrical movement in the arms may be cause of concern. you can also check the patient pupils if they have dilated this also indicates somehing is wrong

The signs are not always that clear to spot my father had a stroke 18 months ago a very severe one which has left him with limited use of one side it is a slow road to recovery and he will never be the same again. His symtoms were, that for a few months before he would get a bad headache and felt as though his left eye had dropped onto his cheek which would last maybe 20 minutes or so. Doctor told him it was another sytom of the migranes he used to get and to take asprin. Even when taken to the hospital it took them 12 hours to diagnose. He was left on a trolley in the corridor for 10 hours before being moved to Sheffields Royal Hallamshire where they confirmed a stroke. Absolutly disgusting care and by that time the damage had been done.

But on a brighter note he is coming over with us in October for a break, he came last October and really enjoyed it. Hope your friend makes a good recovery.
