More or less the same products.....but which do you prefer, and why?

Prices? Or because it seems to be the biggest name around?

Atakara have the best bread, they bake on the premises at least 3 times a day.

And the staff (once you get to know them) are the tops.

Starling is our second port of call with a good selection of products and the prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly.

Dolmaci's in Alsancak are good (the locals shop there) but I think they are starting to lose out to the others stated above and they have lost a lot of staff to the likes of Starling.

Have to agree AJ ,.. Atakara bread is the best.

Mrs T likes Lemar but I think is a "woman" thing.

We agree with AJ too we spent 3 weeks in Asancak Dec/Jan whilst looking at places, my wife speaks some Turkish the staff in Atakara where treating her like a life long friend after only a few days, oh and the bread is just great. Used Starling too and have the same experience as AJ.

Turtle

Yep I think you are right, it is a woman thing. Lemar does nothing for me.

Atakara and the local Starling are by far the best all round shops in the Alsancak area.

i dont think emar is a woman thing i hate it. Starling have the veggies. However I think after us Astro has the best bread. Tempo sometimes better choice of the products we miss but Ileli good all the time. Bells in my opinion expensive for iceland poducts.

An Atakara pearson the Hippo has although thier bread is fine i do prefer the sliced loaf from Dano.

Dolmachi has the best veg.

Ileli-most friendly staff

Starling is ok but not as cheap as it used to be.

Tempo has one or two things you cant get elsewhere

Bells fills a niche for a few european luxury items

*********PN , post edited for an uncalled for attack on an establishment , providing a service to the public , it just could have an adverse affect on their business . You can be very insensative Hippo . Remember Rule 3 ? and as it was a deliberate remark . i am banning you --------- Simbas

Illeli best staff and goods.

Bells overpriced.

Lemar functional and best for bread.

Altaylar best for meat.

Tempo best for (note the spelling Donty) Irn Bru.

Ileli wins hands down for me. Their target is the Brits and they make sure things like Kerrygold butter at 3.90TL for 250g is hard to beat - now cheaper than the South.

Probably Supreme because its on the way home, they sell bread from about 5 or 6 bakers. But yesterday went into lemar and walls thick sausages on special offer , just under 6 tl a packet,

Well Hippo they are certainly not recylced. May not be for you as our products are for the discering clients. I really dont know what you expect me to get away with when all I did was answer a question on Supermarkets. Get a Life. If you have a problem with me get out of your hippo suit and face me.How the hell can Stilton Brie,Taleggio, Gorgonzola Parma Ham etc be recycled.?most of our products as you know are imported from Italy. You have never been in the place yet you constantly put me down when we are trying to make a living. Great British Spirit eh Hippo.

Guido's is by far the most expensive-recycled South Cyprus goods at extorinate prices-(you dont think you where going to get away with it did you lilli) but it does save you the hastle of a cease fire line crossing

Hello Hippo, one of the rules of this forum is to avoid personal attaks on individuals and guess what you done it again!!! i am sick of you attaking my restaurant/delicatessen. come to my place, try my food (i have being serving people all over the world and i never had a complain) and after you can judge or comment. I dont know if i ever met you but it looks like you know me and my wife. Introduce your self to me next time you come to GUIDO'S.

Hi Guido , you don't have to justify anything to Hippo. Your reputation is second to none , judging by all the positive comments that get posted on this forum . He has been banned for a few days , time for him to reflect on some of his posts and the effect it has on people . { hopefully !! }

No(t) defending Hippo, but would he have been banned if he had made the same comments about Lemar? They have a living to make as well.

When we lived in Alsancak,we shopped at Ileli mostly because they always tried harder to get things that you missed from uk,Hp fruity sauce that i cant live without !! Atakara for best bread by far,but watch your reciept,we bought 200 units for turkcell more than once and went back to get our 10ytl back,We think the checkout girl uses Turkcell ? Bells bread is not as good as it used to be.

Try a little compassion , i say try !! did you read the post ? , it was directed at a restaurant not a supermarket , who could well weather a storm { i'm not saying that it's right } , but a small business , well thats another thing . Perhaps i could be your friend , who knows you might just like me ! No pressure Hilltop , we could take it slowly !!

Thanks for bringing the thread back on topic.

It is interesting to see now that various supermarkets have introduced the BOGOF concept.

Hi Patricia

It was not a personal attack on you, but a question that I thought worthy of airing.

I have seen many unmoderated attacks on small businesses on this forum and just wondered why Guido's merited special protection. I have never been in the place so have no idea how accurate Hippo's comments were.

I do not have internet friends, I prefer the real thing.

Yes i agree with mess 17 and 21 Guido's seem's to get plenty of good post's and free advertising on this site,so what's the problem with some negative comment's if that's how someone feel's........ or is that not allowed.

Atakara is my favourite. It does make a difference when the staff are welcoming.

Starling in Alsancak deli is getting much better.

Trouble is I cant get all my favourites in one shop and end up going to 3 to do the weekly shop.

I remember going into the Atakara last summer and finding they had no fresh milk three days running. I asked the lady in charge why this was,

"The cows are broken", she informed me, in perfect English.

The Iskele/Bogaz Lemar is very good. Mainly due to the very friendly staff.

We also use Tesko at Iskele and the new ADA beyond the new Hospital in Famagusta, (London TCs who can't do enough for you).

Erm no actually, I have been cutting back on my postings because my wife thinks I am spending too much time on the board and also the summer is just about to start so I need to be outdoors more. I have my 5 stars so why would I need to increase my postings? Is there a cash prize? Thanks for giving me the chance to increase my postings by 1.

Take care

Getting back on thread, we use Dolmaci more than any of the others, but then it is next door to our apartment. I can't wait to practice my Turkish on them, it should give them a laugh.

Freedom of speech

There is far to much protection for friends and those connected with the board (sticky posts etc). It's not democratic and is the biggest failing of this board.

I have no connection to any of the parties involved and don't shop on the westside.

i've not had Atakara bread but i love Tempo bread, they bake on the premises too and i think it's the best, the worst in my opinion is Astro. i also find i end up going to a few different shops as i can't always get everything in one but i think i'll be visiting ileli, maybe i'll be able to get some reasonably priced mixed herbs!

Coachie ,re East side there are good supermarkets on the main stretch just before you turn off onto the main road for TBV ,(near army base) you have a supermarket on TURTLE BAY , whch is small but well equipped . Then you have another small well equpped one at Esentepe village , and a couple at Tatlisu , and a small one in Tatlisu village . Hope this helps .
