Hi all,

I have previously heard and read elsewhere about NC has power surges and can cause tremendous damage to electrical equiptment!

So I was wondering what is available to protect our property from this happening?

For example a regulator fitted to a fuse box etc??

Where can we get these from or who can install them and how much does it cost etc???

Any advice would be much appreciated and thanx in advance !!!!

Take care-D

hi davidoff

how u been, long time girl!!! lol

like turkey north cyprus does suffer from power surges, the best way and cheapest to protect your electrical products is to buy a whole load of power surge protectors you can get these from argos and you just simply plug you electrical products in to it then plug the protector in to your wall mains

if you got a pc you can buy a bit of kit called a u.p.s not sure they sell these in the u.k but cyprus they defo do and with this bit of kit you plug everything to do with your pc into this firstly it protects it against surges and also if your electric gets cut off it has a battery back up so you can safley turn your comp off without lossing vital info or causing a problem to your hard drive

hope this helps

I was actually looking at these in the Argos book last night and couldnt believe how many there was on the market. From what i read it seems that the biggers the amp?? the better it is. My question to you UKTurk is the cheaper ones just as good as the dearer ones in this book i find it a little confusing to say the least.

ok if you got a lot of electrical products in one place the go for the 8-way version

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9820896/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500011405.Sound%2Band%2Bvision%3EC%24cip%3D1500011414.Electrical%2Baccessories%3EC%24cip%3D1500011416.Leads%2C%2Bconnectors%2Band%2Badaptors.htm £25

of if you only have a small amount go for the 4 plug version

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9827796/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500011405.Sound%2Band%2Bvision%3EC%24cip%3D1500011414.Electrical%2Baccessories%3EC%24cip%3D1500011416.Leads%2C%2Bconnectors%2Band%2Badaptors.htm £12

Not sure if we need a UPS cus just looked at my laptop and it has it own surge protector fitted to it. so double protection. But that doesnt mean you can get away with it im sure the info would help others. thanks m8

Thanks yet again uk turk!!!

You should run for president!!!!! You get my vote anyday!!!!

Sorry to be a pest but another question for you what are the sockets in NC like??

Do we need adaptors or are the NC sockets the same 3 pin version like ours??

So we can plug them straight in as is or not??

Take care-D

Davidoff

The apartment that we have at TBV is all 3 pin, I think the rest of N. Cyprus is the same. When we moved in we bought a kettle locally, but this was 2 pin as it was probably Turkish.

Everytime we now go back we take electrical equiptment from the UK, ie toaster, sandwich maker, George Foreman grill.

Hi guys n gals,

Had a good look at my argos catalogue and the only downside is that they dont have individual power surge socket protectors they only come in 4s or 8s!

Someone must do individual ones that just plug straight into the existing socket so it doesnt look as bulky and huge and unsightly especially for the kitchen appliances??

Could you imagine large 4 socket extension drapping over you kitchen worktops??

Then having to plug in turkish adaptors into those then plug the appliances into those>>>

ITS WILL LOOK LIKE A MINI TOWER OF PISA WAITING TO ELECTRICUTE YOU AT ANY POINT ?? OR THE SLIGHTEST DROP OF WATER FROM THE SINK COULD BLOW YOUR FUSE BOX AND THE APPLIANCES IN ONE FAIL SWOOP??

Take care all-D

P.S -If anyone finds single power surge sockets can you let us know -cheers!!

Just to let you all know on the subject of power surgers, we are taking out:

Two APC Line-R 1200 watt automatic voltage regulators (one for the PC and ancillary equipment and the other for the TV and hifi) for brownouts and over- voltages. These are available on Amazon but note that they CANNOT BE USED for equipment with AC motors such as fridges. Also note they need EU Line plugs and sockets (like you have on a PC). These are available from Maplin.

For spikes and surge protection, we are taking out Belkin SurgeCubes for each individual socket. These can be obtained from Amazon.

I feel that I have a few things to say here. If your main problem is electrical surges and this happens mostly when the power is switched back on or when there is a thunderstorm or lightining, then the use of proper surge protectors or surge arresters as they are known is a good investment but go for the bes make you can find i.e. Belgin.

The quality of a Surge Protecter is measured by how fast it acts i.e. a surge due to lightening rises at about 5 KV per microsecond and your protector must be able to short circuit it before it goes over say 4-500 volts. In the seenbties they used tritium (an isotope of Hydrogen which was lightly radioactive) and thus it could catch the surges very fast. I hear that radioactive materials are not allowed any longer so I have no idea how good they are now.

Anyway, back to the subject. If your area suffers from high or mostly low voltages, the standard brand of regulators available in the market is ELKO Brand and they are the best, available from 0.5 KVA to 30 KVA and the prices ranging from 88 dollars to 1500 dollars. Is that brand familiar? I bet it is
