Well now most,or certainly many, of our properties in the UK have lost anything from 20-30% of their value do you think the governement/local authorites will be issuing rebates or at least smaller council tax demands as houses fall into lesser property bands?

Always happy to re-adjust the charges/tax up... how quickly do you think they will they be readjusted down?

Chance for the politicians to be honest perhaps

Joseph.... good point!

I know that you won't be holding your breath.

Thank goodness that I don't have to worry about property problems in the UK - mind you, I've got enough on my plate here!

Slightly tangential... but exactly how are local authority taxes raised in TRNC

Is it based on property values, geography re the area you are in etc etc

What kind of charges per annum/month reflect apartments and or villas?

joseph,

I'm sorry (really!) to tell you that you've not a chance.

You can look up the gory details here: -

http://www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax/cti_home.htm , but I think that the following extract is sufficient...

"The council tax band of a property is not related to its current market value. This is because, by law, council tax valuations are based on the price a property would have fetched if it had been sold on 1 April 1991."

Thanks K/C

I will have a good read of your link to see if the 1991 benchmark is set in stone?

Meanwhile... How are local taxes worked out in TRNC re msg3

don't forget the annual property tax, payable by the no. of names on the Kocan. Also heard today the MOT joke Test has risen to 100tl and the dates have changed with a shorter window to get it tested. Don't you just love it here.

Hi Washaman,

Thanks for the info, so currently 100ytl covers council and collection tax, but what are the annual property taxes referred to by Quarmby in Ozankoy?

Any other members got figures just for the sake of comparison?

the property tax is paid at the tax office , same place as car tax is paid and is according to size of property and additional if you have a pool.

Quarmby, thanks for info...

I gather then that this is an annual tax, over and above those mentioned earlier by Washaman. Wouldn't expect you to reveal your own personal tax dues but as a rough guide what kind of charges do they excise... any idea?

Well just had my Council Tax bill in for the coming year and it's INCREASED by £3 a month. Not a lot, admitadly, but as my property is technically in a lower band I really wasn't expecting it to follow suite. But I do believe that this year my council will be reviewing banding rates. Be interesting to see what they come up with!

Think yourself lucky, the UK is bankrupt and has borrowed money to service their debts, the IMF is close to bankruptcy and is asking for countries like Germany to increase their financial input, the EU have a major problem with some East European economies pulling the boat down. Now where would you much rather be? Believe me I have predicted this situation for over two years now and it will get worse before it gets better, minimum of 3 years but my guess is 5 years before an upturn in the world economy but my guess is that Turkey (and the TRNC) and maybe Germany will remain relatively stable and will become the emerging economies of this recession.

And your question was: 'Don't you just love it here'

Oh yep, I do love it here..

Well AJ here is the news...

Flash Gordon has today called upon a return to family values

Not sure whether this is aimed at... all the pensioners whose pensions he has robbed, all the young people whom he has forced into huge debt to attend university, doctors and nurses who are now out numbered by managers, teachers over-weighed with sex education and target tests, our soldiers abroad who are under equipped, the police who are no longer safe on the streets, mps with their snouts in the trough or just ministers who like to download porn movies and charge it to the tax payer... you choose

Quarmby..

Thanks again for the up to date info...

Have it in my mind now that if I save say 500 tl per annum I should be able to cover all my property taxes, council taxes and collection tax.

All important info to which up til now I had not given too much thought...

Thanks

Take care

Hi AJ...

Well as I tried to explain to Dutch on another post we Brits like nothing better than a good moan, but I think with this lot it is well deserved.

But again I don't underestimate the British people... ( not the politicians... they've lost it)... I think people over here will take so much until enough is enough... I always say it is the people that make the UK great... not the politicians; any where else the barricades would have gone up years ago

Interestingly a day before the G20 summit a lot of those countries invited are asking why on earth should they follow the lead of Brown and Obama when it is their policies that caused the problems in the first place. Noticeably Germany are refusing to follow Flash Gordon request for another huge billion pound stimulus; but ofcourse they can afford not to, they saved during the good years and didn't sell of the family silverware meantimes a la Gordon

Re the UK Council tax. My wife got a huge rebate last year after checking what the other houses in the street were paying. She found out that other similar houses were a band below. This went back to when the houses were built in the 1960's. Our house had been noted down wrongly hence paying a higher band all these years.

Result! Can all be checked on the internet these days. Well worth checking.
