the south was vitually closed yesterday and on my way to Larnica ( sorry no other choice ) airport, I was told it was ' EOKA day festival', surely the EU would'nt allow the Greeks to hold a festival to a murderous group of terrorists that have, quite rightly, been vilified for 50 years

Tasgirl

It would seem they do " 01st April Greek Cypriot National Day AKA EOKA Day"!!!

Funny that Juliet only commented on your spelling and the fact you went to larnaca airport and not the actual question you posed???

Sorry for the spelling error, I'm from North of the Border and spell as I speak. I always use Ercan, however, on this occasion I was collecting a close friend

I am beginning to wonder what this board is all about! Why are you all being so petty pulling each other up on spelling mistakes. We all have our failings.

Dear "Juliet" re msg 4

"correct" spelling in English when translating from Greek.. the "rump" RoC road signs in the m/ways say LarnaKa and you'll see Pafos - then there's Ayios / Agios ( saint) - I don't think there is a "correct" way?!

EOKA DAY - for those who are "confused" is a tribute to those in the struggle for independence form the British.

They shouldn't be confused with EOKA B.

Yes, EOKA killed UK troops as did many other countries struggling for independence.

You'll find plenty of ex service personnel in their 70's now retired in CY who fought against this guys and who are firm friends.

Some, it seems here, want to live in the past..

Mark,

One of the less-mentioned problems in the negotiations is most TCs want the holiday dropped and most GCs want it kept. By keeping a holiday in memory of Eoka it is the GCs who are promulgating an extremely distasteful view of the past.

Eoka in all its forms holds massively negative connotations for us TCs. Please don't forget that hundreds of TCs signed up to help the British with the fight against Eoka A. Their manifesto vis-a-vis TCs was well-known long before independence.

Too, I think you'll find there are a greater number of friendships between the TC "Special Constables" - actually fluent Greek-speaking intelligence operatives - and ex-British servicemen than between the latter and EOKA members as most of the Brits on station here during the insurgency have neither forgotten nor forgiven the attacks on servicemen and their families in the 1950s.

Dear LG, re msg 12

I can well understand the negativity, Gordon, but as my ex-British army neighbours in L'sol would say.. the Brits used the TC special constables to do unpleasant things that UK Troops couldn't / wouldn't do and this is all part of the "divide and rule" mentality that was part of the UK's attempt to keep the bases.

"think you'll find there are a greater number of friendships between the TC "Special Constables" - actually fluent Greek-speaking intelligence operatives - and ex-British servicemen than between the latter and EOKA members as most of the Brits on station here during the insurgency have neither forgotten nor forgiven the attacks on servicemen and their families in the 1950s.

"

Forgive me, that's not my experience - but it doesn't make you wrong !

If you have time, I'll introduce you to guys living in L'sol who served in CY and fought EOKA alongside TC specials..

Former enemies are firm friends, Gordon - they've moved on..

Msg 2, juliet > larnaca is the correct spelling!!! <

===> No, it's not. It's Larnaca. And three exclamation marks also qualify as an error in the English language. One is enough and only when needed.

Some people spell the word guarantee as garantee. Clearly this is incorrect. For example, consider this sentence...

The Deputy Prime Minister has given a Guarantee to all owners of property in the trnc.

Now, if you had typed this : The Deputy Prime Minister has given a Garantee to all owners of property in the trnc, the word Guarantee would have been spelt incorrectly.

Hope this helps.

As clear as day Murray.

In my book that means, a promise or assurance, especially one in writing, that something is of specified quality, content, benefit, etc., something that assures a particular outcome or condition. to undertake to ensure for another, as rights or possessions. to promise.

Thats Guaranteed )

MMMM you should have been a politician the eoka was the struggle for independence from Britain, dont make me laugh. The eoka went into full swing after it had its independence from Britain. For someone who claims to have so much knowledge about Cyprus you have a very biased opinion of the eoka. It was well documented that eokas struggle was for enosis not independence.

There is a long list of british serviceman who were killed by the eoka I dont think these mens families can forget the past.
