hi from a new member

seeking a warm spot for retirement, you won't believe it but i've only just discovered cyprus! i've spent YEARS scanning france, then turned to italy briefly and suddenly i'm here and it sounds almost to good to be true!

everything i've read so far is extremely positive, but i wonder if anyone can tell me if i'll be able to find a peaceful spot without tourists (i have plenty of those in cambridge) in true countryside, with a local market, not necessarily close to a beach, and will i be able to grow vegetables and raise chickens - these are my aspirations.

thanks in anticipation,

chrissie

North Cyprus was made for you - there are so any wonderful and peaceful places - it was one of the things I noticed when I first visited NC, where you can still find loads of organically grown food as well - go and have a look.

Best of luck

Forgot to tell you that friends of ours, who are passionate about growing their own vegetables have spent the last two years also looking at Portugal, Spain and France. They spent three weeks in NC at the beginning of this year and are now planning to retire to NC. They felt it was the last place you could find a reasonable amount of land but still enjoy the weather.

dear milou

thanks you SO much for your responses. i just can't believe that i didn't look at cyprus before having spent such a lot of time elsewhere.

the fact that you say NC was made for me is the most exciting thing i've heard in months - i just can't wait now to make my first trip over.

hope you're enjoying your weather coz it's diabolical over here!!

best wishes,

chrissie in dull old cambridge

My advice to you is go over to the TRNC a couple of times, both summer & winter. If you then think you could settle, rent for a year. In that time you should really get the feel of the place. Although we love the place it is not for everyone, you either love it or loathe it, no half measures.

So go, enjoy but try & keep your tourist head off when looking at long term.

A post script, Guzelyurt may be a good area to look in. It's not a tourist spot, great for growing things & a good local market every Saturday.

The-Wicks has made a very good point. Guzelyurt region is one of our least spoiled but also -most suitable to grow things- area. Guzelyurt itself would be a nice spot.

You may also try Yesilirmak(meaning Green River) village, which is at the westernmost part of Northern Cyprus near Lefke. Yesilirmak is famous for its tasty vegetables one of which being strawberry. The area has lots of underground water and a major underground river and as far as i know is one of the few areas where irrigated farming( i dont know if this is the correct translation) is done.

Lefke is a large village and also has lots of underground water. It also has some nice ottoman style mansions.

I have heard that some Cypriots from cities, especially Nicosia, rent Village houses in Yesilirmak the summer for staying during the holiday.

dear P&J

thank you very much - that's just the sort of info i need, a place name to start looking. i'm going to fly google-earth over guzelyurt right now!

i had always planned to rent for some time, wherever i ended up - there's really no other way of getting beneath the skin of an area, is there.

luckily, i don't own a tourist head, never having been one!

thanks again, best wishes,

chrissie

hi chrissie.

we have brought an apartment at guzelyurt just outside the town, but also right next to the beach.this area seems a lot greener than the rest of the island and a lot quieter than the main resorts.we are over in june to have a look around as we brought off plan.one of the reasons we chose this area because it seemed to be more in the countryside also we have the beach as well..so hopefully the best of both worlds.good luck with your retirement plans..

Try the Karpaz Peninsula area - Chrissy - if you are wanting a quiet area. There is plenty of unspoilt countryside the further east you go - on the south of the Karpaz side it is very peaceful. It is a further from the airport but then the pay back is well worth it.
