Not so long ago, it became unacceptable for society to put its citizens in stocks, or publicly dunk them in water, brand them or to burn them alive. These are outdated methods of punishment. Are prisons now an outdated form of punishment?

Pat. I've nothing specific in mind, I just thought I would see if anyone can come up with an alternative form of punishment rather than prison. I know to some extent community service is supposed to be effective, but is it? If you had commited a minor offence and you had to meet with a group of likeminded criminals once a week to get graffiti off of a wall or chewing gum off of bus seats, would it stop you reoffending?

Hi Doyen, Depending on what has been done. Such as rape, murder, etc then I think you need a good hard prison such as work everyday. For little crimes then they should be sent to Afgan to help make the food and drinks for the armed forces for a month at a time, then maybe when they come back they will think twice about doing it again. Thanks. David.

'Custodial sentences will always be at the core of the criminal justice system as long as the public needs to be protected from certain offenders. Some of whom I'm just off to see now.' John Give my regards to Gary.

The offenders should be put through the same act as they have performed on there victims,I know this will not work in many cases and many do gooders would cry OH NO. x

I think the jail here should be closed down. A friend of our was wrongly arrested this week. A bag was put over his head and beaten and kicked to within an inch of his life. Barbaric to say the least. He was later released when they realised they had the wrong person without any apology. They tried to beat a confession out of him. That couldnt happen in Uk any more but where are a persons rights here in cases like this.

I would build more. No1 's question reflects that the system has broken down as yet again the politicians are failing in their duty to the public re tariffs. Two recent case points... last week a woman and her boyfriend were sentenced to three years for causing the death of her little child.. 2yrs old. The postmortum revealed the little girl had at some time had both arms broken, both legs broken and several ribs. If that was your child/grandchild how would you feel about such a sentence. A young teenager was murdered by a yob (knifed I think). The yob was 19, the young lad 16, the victim is gone forever... the yob given 13 years. I believe society should show mercy but... can only show such mercy when it is in control of crime etc and not, as is apparent, such evil acts are out of control. As the popular song goes... let the punishment fit the crime. I think the pendulum has swung far too much towards the do gooders without due diligence... or am I wrong? Joseph
