Just want every one to know how it felt last week at the BRS agm! I was one of the 6 people who challanged the old BRS and consequently i have had a barrage of abuse and name callıng! See Dan Gibson's column in the Star. I just want every one to know that we are proud of standing up for our believes and if you see the resolutions ın today's Cyprus Today, ı don't thınk you can really accuse us of doıng anythıng for polıtıcal gaın! My stance on lıfe here is - well ı want a happy and secure future for my chıldren - and ı am happy to help anyone else who has sımılar concerns. So, before you believe all the gossip - unfairly being spread about some of the 'US' *-the mafia, the idiots, the rebels, just thınk before repeat! yes ı dared to stand up and be counted - yes ı do understand ı wıll then be open to publıc debate and dıscussıon - but please leave all the untruths out

nige, the old raj paved the way for us. their stupidity is the reasons why we get treated the way we do. its about time more people stood up for themselves and show this country we are not mugs.

Hi semtcm, re msg 1 I'm guessing BRS stands for British Residents Association, and relates to residents of "TRNC". Can anyone tell me how to read the CY Star / Today? .. None of this post makes much sense - and I want to understand..

Libby, You and your better half are making large in roads into the community ensuring all groups live, play and work together. I do not know how you fit in all the things you are involved in. I am not a BRS member and as long as clowns like Maternahan or whatever are involved I do not wish to be, I will not go into reasons here. Him and his ilk are so insular creating an image of the BRS members being the only people who actively live here and they have negotiated on behalf of everybody in the past. In fact the BRS because of the image they have created probably represent less than 10% of those ex pats who live here. Rose has it spot on, the old Raj have screwed the rest of us. I overheard a conversation 10 days ago among a group of the "blue rinse set" which went along the lines of "we must go because THEY are going mob handed". What a reflection of the true attitudes. So Libby and Alex, forget the Raj, 95% of those here suppost you IMO.

"clowns like Maternaghan" Cyprusishome; For what it`s worth the "clown" has negotiated on behalf of everybody in the past including many non BRS members, ie; getting the government to waive £25k in medical bills for one person who was badly injured in the Karpaz. And persuading the government to treat our residency applications in the same way as other nationalities. If you had been here longer than a couple of years you would have known that the annual residency was around £220 per annum until the "clown" intervened. I would be interested to know what contribution you have made to life in Cyprus but then it`s probably zero. IMO.

I attended my first BRS AGM and was shocked at the obvious hostility of the BRS to those prepared to offer themselves for election to the committee. Not personally aware of any history it seemed that the existing committee adopted a siege mentality. The term 'clique' was mentioned once or twice and it was clearly demonstrated that a clique does exist. I recognise they have BRS has done good work in the past but I do not really understand why they were so resistant to new blood and new ideas. I was also surprised at the racist attitude, particulary of the acting chairman, to members who do not live here on a permanent basis, these were sneeringly referred to as 'swallows'. It was an eye-opener and my response was to vote for all of the six new members and none of the existing committee. Hopefully the two new members elected will help to move it foward in a more open manner but I fear they will be constantly out voted.

hi newscoop you say that they have talked the gov into treating our residency applications in the same way as other nationalities. so how many turkish mainlanders do you know applying for residence with the same financial backing as us brits are asked to show? i feel we have made a big contribution to cyprus life as all our trusted friends here are cypriot. any chance i have to speak with anyone connected or in politics i bring up issue like where are the brits kochans? even though we have ours. who is actually listenening to the brs, nobody. the only people who can change things or help you here are the cypriot people.

fire starter; It`s patently obvious that Turkish mainlanders assets are not going to match those required by Brits and the like. The fees however are the same. Calling someone who gives freely of his time a "clown" is debasing and insulting and shows the person doing the insulting in a bad light. That person was not you and the question about the contribution to life in Cyprus was not directed at you. That said; just how are you going to show the Cypriot people that you "are not going to sit down and take it?"

From my dealings with said person he was also rude, insulting, patronising and certainly not showing any interest to our questions as newcomers to the country. Both he and the deceased former chairman called my wife and I liars in the press and refused to apologise when the evidence was presented. The comments of niftyduo above certainly fit the bill. I may reconsider joining the club in the next year and if so will make strong efforst to get rid of the raj in order to allow the BRS to move forwards into the 20th century. Last point. Over 3 years when we first came we were going to join, went to the hut on a saturday and despite people being inside talking the refused to open the door to talk to us. I say again rude, patronising and think they rule the country, well no more.

BRS isnt this for really old posh people who only drink earl grey tea and eat cucumber sandwiches with the crusts trimmed. Although I have to say the BRS are very handy if you need cheap spares for your colostomy bags etc...

newscoop sorry i was elsewhere. i won't allow the tc's to rip me off, or anyone else. many people just tollerate being mugged off, niether of us will. those who try it once soon learn not to try it again and then repect you for it. i won't pay over the odds for anything, just because the brits eat or drink something the prices are up. whilst people keep paying they will keep increasing the prices. boycot all those places which treat the expats as mugs would be a start! can anyone else say they have had a 14k refund ? how did we do it? shout as louds as possible, not all tc people are bad just those who think they can get away with it. in our experience the local judge already knew of the company who tried it with us,they had been in court for doing it to someone else and once he listened to our experience i guess their card was marked for the next time they meet. a small minority of people give everyone a bad name.

Firestarter; Well done on your success and all power to you, but it should be noted that until the mass Brit arrivals in 2003/4 the locals generally kept their prices low.

newscoop i totally agree i do feel we are masters of our own destiny. you wouldn't tollerate being ripped off, charged extra, shody goods or workmanship in the uk/e.u. so why stand for it here? we also were having some doors made for our house, whilst hubby was at the place concerned the owner in turkish asked our tc friend why he was helping us and would he be up for charging us up with him. our tc friend went mental and was thrown out of the guys showroom, and banned! this guy who was trying to rip us off quotes he is a expoliceman. the funny thing is our friends brother in law is currently one of the top policemen here and knows all about this rip off merchant. i'm sure what goes around comes back around, lol. i truely believe that until we all stand up for ourselves nothing will change.
